French Polynesia Marquesas Islands Windstar Cruises is a cruise ship line notable for its modern computer-controlled sailing ships. The line was established as Windstar Sail Cruises in 1984, and its first ship, the msy Wind Star, launched in 1986, followed by the Wind Song and Wind Spirit. Two additional ships were ordered from the French "Ateliers et chantiers du Havre" shipyard: the Wind Surf and the Wind Saga. These two ships were to be larger than the originals, holding over twice the amount of passengers and reaching a length of 660 ft compared to the smaller vessels of 440 ft in length. Holland America Line purchased 50% of Windstar Sail Cruises in 1987 and purchased the balance of the company in 1988. The option to continue building the Wind Surf and the Wind Saga was passed up by HAL. Even seasoned cruise travelers are often lost at sea when it comes to gratuities on cruise ships, so here are some guidelines to make tipping simple. Most mainstream cruise lines have automatic gratuities. A charge equal to $10-$13 per guest per day shows up on your onboard account, and this covers room stewards and wait staff. You can leave the charge there, or ask at the pursers desk to have the charge removed if you want to tip directly. I personally tend to leave these amounts alone, and supplement it by giving cash directly to people who provide exceptional service. I also like to slip the cabin steward an extra $20 on the first day of the cruise to make sure my family gets extra attention.
