"O Holy, blessed Bethlehem". Jacob van Eyck (1590-1657) has this melody and three variations in his "Der Fluyten Lust-Hof". Written for solo recorder, it has no bass line of course. I took the melody and first variation from van Eyck and took the bass line from a setting for carillon from 1728, which is especially fitting, because van Eyck was the carillon player of the Utrecht Cathedral.

This is a recording of one of my compositions, Kaleidoscopic Variations on a Theme by Elie Siegmeister. It was written to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the composer's birth. I studied with him when I was a university student. The theme is taken from a piece of Siegmeister's I played as a boy, "Song of the Dark Woods," and the "Kaleidoscope" of the title refers to the piece's origin in a collection titled "American Kaleidoscope."
