NJT Deadhead breaks down at Ho-Ho-Kus Read Description Video
READ FIRST:
Train X170, the weekend deadhead move from Suffern to Hoboken slows through Ho-Ho-Kus on the heels of another eastbound local. Right before the cabcar cab exits the view, you will hear a noise, then as the train comes to a stop, a hissing of escaping air. I noticed this after reviewing the video at home, I was completely clueless will shooting this. You will also hear the train dump twice in this video as the engineer looks to find a problem, or correct it. After reviewing I will ASSUME, and say that the first pop in the video, and this hissing as the train stops is most likely a air hose seperation between the B end of the cabcar and the A end of the 1st trailing coach. If anyone knows what happened, let me know. I left about 10 minutes after this, the train was still there when I left.

NJT4111: It had nothing to do with the locomotive, from what I see and hear in the video, im gonna guess a airline seperation. The only thing that makes me think its NOT that, is that he dumped it to reset something
Railfan108: i know i am just saying, that i could see this happening, PL and camet 5, messed up, that is a disaster, along with any consist the PL's run
GenesisSanctuary: Figures as much. This really makes me wonder what the hell NJT is thinking by wanting to kill off all the Comet 3s and Comet 4s.
nhlives: looks and sounds like the cab signal gave him an unintended penalty. The ML is not active cab signal is it? If not he could have departed Hillburn with the ATC cut in as normal and taken a false hit - it happens sometimes - the only way to recover on some equipment is to fully reset the trains brakes....this can be especially prevalent if there is a slip slide condition causing the speedometer to flip out as the wheels slip.... This is just my guess as I know very little about the comet-Vs...
NJT4111: well, that could be very true, it has happened, and most likely did hear. But my main idea against this is that he was on a approch with a eastbound in the next block, meaning he had a restricting around the curve at camerons. He was just slowing down for the cabsignal to stop hitting overspeed, as soon as he taps the breaks again, its stops imediatly
2005GLI: on extra equipment moves like this, how many employee's are on the trains? Is it just the engineer by himself?
NJT4111: 3. A train connot move without a engineer, conductor, and rear brake
2005GLI: ok, but is that for "revenue" passenger moves or fall all moves? It certainly doesn't apply to freight trains.
EDDONLEY: I remember leaving out of Red Bank and the ALP that was pushing us blew the circuit breakers 3 times. we had to walk from the cab car all the way to the rear to reset the breakers. My instructor was a little overweight and was physically wiped out before we got to our first stop, late of course.Turned out to be a bad control cable and it was replaced when we got to Penn Station. First day on the job for me and we were late 10 minutes at every stop.
NJT4111: thats a nice "welcome to Transit" gift. Happens all the time, its mainly becasue or mentence in the Medows penny pinch on repiars, that take forever to complete, then we are left with a power shortage, and trains held together with glue and tape
NJTAmtrakGuy: It blew circuit breakers 3 times? Was it an ALP-44 or an ALP-46?
NJTAmtrakGuy: It sounds like a break issue.
EDDONLEY: ALP-44 , All of the 46s were still at the MMC as well as the new 2 level cars getting post delivery inspections. I enjoyed the F40PHs the most, Except at about 70-80mph , they would sway side to side . Felt like it would walk off the rails. The Raritan was any easy run but I had a couple of teenagers with headphones on, almost become hood ornaments.
NJT4111: RVL is some bad teritory, town wise, and the F40s can't even get up to 70-80 anymore, between stations at least. But I know what you are talking about, gets really rough
EDDONLEY: Sounds like you still have your control handles. Some of the crazy stuff the instructor engineers would do would curdle my blood, Like always keeping frozen water bottles in your cooler so that you could {Return Fire} at rock throwers. The ol standem up sittem down throttle brake procedure . AND my favorite, was FIND WALDO at Paterson Station. If you know what i am talking about, i will leave it there.
NJT4111: water bottles is a classic. Un-frozen works just as good. "Who cares bout your passengers, as long as you are confortable in the cab". and the Waldo, i have never heard, but it sounds like another transit hilarity
EDDONLEY: Wheres Waldo is a game , Paterson Station is mostly Indian {middle eastern not American Indian} customers . There was only one white guy who was very tall, had the big rimmed glasses and stuck out like a sore thumb, who ever spotted him first didnt have to buy breakfast at Penn Station.
NJT4111: AHAHAHAH!! I KNOW EXACTLY WHO YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT! Ive heard things, never seen him in person though
trainboy38: Was the engineer trying to throttle up at 3:15-3:23 or was that just the fan?
trainzrok: it was the throttle
ohiotransit9: Maybe it was the dyanmics as dumb as that sounds.
trainzrok: the comet IIIs are slowely beginning to fall apart. ALL comet IIIs have been taken out of service.....getting ready to be scrapped. The comet IVs will last much longer.
GenesisSanctuary: Well that sucks. I'll realy miss the Comet 3s.;(
NJTAmtrakGuy: WHAT?!?! They are gonna scrap the comet IIIs that sucks I like the comet III cars even though they are old. :(
trainzrok: old stuff is the best!
