"I just wanted to tell you something..." Joe murmured. I could sense a heavy trace of sorrow in his voice, which was the only factor that gave me enough courage to face him.
And as soon as I looked at him, a flood of ease invaded me.
He looked terrible. He had dark, purple ringlets under his eyes, as if he hadn't been sleeping. And they were also slightly puffed up, while the white was tinged red.
Had he been crying? Or, perhaps, lacking sleep?
"What is it...?" I repeated quietly, now less afraid than before.
"I...I wanted to..." Joe tugged anxiously on the collar of his shirt, struggling to reply. "I just wanted to say...I'm s-sorry...."
My ears perked. Sorry? Had he just said sorry? Had Joe "Master" Jonas just uttered the word "sorry"?
"What was that?" I asked, almost frantically.
Joe bit his lip lightly and stared at me.
"I said that I'm sorry."
[Becca]
I felt a rush of panic lodge itself into my gut. So, very violently, I shoved myself off of Nick.
"What is it?" Nick asked, suddenly worried.
"L-look in the trees," I whispered, pointing frantically at the shadow.
Nick stared in the direction, and his eyes widened.
"That's Kevin," he said, panicked. "Get your clothes on and hide behind that tree." He directed his hand at a tall, leafless oak tree.
I didn't have enough moments to re-dress myself, so I just hurried behind it, clutching my soaking rags in one hand.
Kevin appeared in the huddle of trees a moment later, but turned his head away disgustedly when he noticed Nick was completely bare.
"Nick!" he shouted. "What the fuck!?"
"What?" Nick snapped, resting his hands girlishly on his hips. "A guy can't take a bath without being harassed by his brother?"
Kevin directed his eyes away from Nick, but continued to speak.
"I heard a girl's voice."
Nick laughed convincingly and shook his head.
"Then I suggest you call a doctor, Kevin, because you're hearing things."
Kevin's eyes narrowed dangerously, although they were still glaring away from Nick.
"I KNOW what I heard," he snapped.
Nick sighed, sensing his brother's hostility.
"All right, Kevin," he agreed. "Can you please go? I have to get changed back into my clothing."
Kevin shook his head, refusing, and started pacing angrily around the woods.
"I KNOW I heard a girl's voice!" he growled. "Now where is the little bitch?"
"Kevin..." Nick said carefully, edging closer and closer to the tree I was positioned behind, as if to shield me. "You're hearing things. There's no one here but me.... Just go so I can get dressed and get back to work."
"Where is she!?" Kevin demanded furiously, finally facing Nick, despite the awkwardness, and shoving him to the filthy ground.
I squealed slightly, but kept my emotions steady.
"What the heck?" Nick grumbled, clothing himself in his pants and shirt.
"Where. Is. She?" Kevin demanded, lifting his brother off the ground by the collar of his rags. "I swear, if you don't tell me-"
"No one else is here!" Nick shouted, pulling himself out of Kevin's firm grip. "Would you fucking leave?"
I didnt know why Kevin was letting Nick get away with speaking to him that way. Not that I was complaining. It just surprised me.
"Fine," Kevin grumbled threateningly, spinning on his heel, "but when I find her, which I WILL, she's DEAD. And so are you."
