Democrats Moving to Ditch Pro-Life Amendment to PelosiCare Video
Appearing on MSNBC today, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) declared: I am confident that the Stupak amendment will not be in the final version of the bill — we will be working very hard to eliminate it.
The Stupak Amendment authored by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI) was adopted by a bipartisan majority (240-194-1) and would prohibit federal funding of abortions under the House Speaker Nancy Pelosis (D-CA) government takeover of health care. Leader Boehner and other House Republican Leaders commented at the time:
[T]he Stupak-Pitts Amendment's passage is the right thing to do. We believe you just dont play politics with life. When this bill is conferenced with the Senate, the pro-life majority in the House of Representatives must ensure that this important amendment is in the final legislation. If it does not, this same strong majority must defeat the bill.
Thats why during debate on Speaker Nancy Pelosis bill to impose a government takeover of health care, Leader Boehner challenged the three Democratic committee chairmen with jurisdiction over the bill to pledge that they will vote to keep a pro-life amendment in the bill during House-Senate conference negotiations. Disappointingly, all three Democratic chairmen refused to guarantee they support keeping the Stupak language in the final conference committee bill.
Leader Boehners suspicions about Democratic leaders were confirmed today not just by Rep. Wasserman Schultzs comments, but by a letter signed by 41 House Democrats threatening to vote against Speaker Pelosis government takeover of health care if it contains Rep. Stupaks pro-life amendment.
Will Democratic House Leaders, from Speaker Pelosi on down to the three Committee Chairmen with jurisdiction over health care - Reps. Henry Waxman (D-CA), Charlie Rangel (D-NY), George Miller (D-CA) stand up for the pro-life amendment in conference committee, or will they cave to the pro-abortion Democrats?
Judging by their answers on Saturday, every American who supports the long standing federal policy of barring federal tax dollars from supporting abortion should be worried about what Democrats have in store.
172677: I suppose you could say the same thing about the morbidly obese or those who indulge in reckless behavior like smoking, drunk driving, erratic driving, mountain climbing, scuba diving, etc. No complaints about that, I suppose. If you don't want to be called a Daddy, abstain or wrap it up, bub. Once it's a done deal, you are in it for life....
FebMarAprMayDec: I would like to ask you again to be respectful of those you disagree with. I am over 50, have an advanced degree, and have worked in professional management positions almost my whole life. My spouse and I have well over a mil in retirement assets, and will be paying for private college costs for two children on our own. Most people would consider us wealthy. The top 3% of the population control most of the wealth in this country. The middle class doesn't catch a break. That's most people.
retrorocket2: Not buying it at all. I am over 60. Didn't have time for an advanced degree but have worked up to and including president/CEO. I deal with operational costs for small businesses as a board director. You personal accomplishments are to be respected but what constitutional provision allows the federal government to steal my property and give it to other without regard for my efforts. I am the middle class. I don't want to catch a break. I want to work hard and make a break.
retrorocket2: Works for me. Life sucks at its very best. Just when did that lifeless conscious bag of cells become a child worth millions? That is what confuses me to the core. There is no ethical standard that supports some magic moment of consciousness that transfers that type of moral value onto a "collection of cells without conscious thought". This ain't about religion. This is pure logic within a proffered argument for a specific position.
retrorocket2: If you don't believe I have a right to dictate my opinion then why are we stealing money from hard working people to pay for it. If someone with a gun (government with IRS) takes property (money) from someone under coercion - that is stealing. This is not about national defense, common welfare, or economics. This is a political power grab for the only high-growth business segment of our economy.
retrorocket2: I guess I am hung up on that word illegal. We began birth control, sex education, and morality training in the 50's when I was in school under the misnomer of health education. Yet, teen pregnancy shot up. Women decided, after one decision, that the decision to have unprotected sex with a man they did not want to have a child with was a bad idea. So, they want someone else to be responsible for their lack of responsibility. Is the sequence right?
FebMarAprMayDec: While not at the executive level, I have worked in senior management and in start ups, so I know a few things about how businesses work. All this money was earned by living below our means. The targets for tax increases are well above at least what 97% of people in the US earn. People filing jointly who make over $350K a year will pay more and the tax is graduated. People who work hard should be able to make a living wage. 1 in 4 working people in Houston are uninsured yet 88% of them have jobs.
FebMarAprMayDec: I was talking about women's reproductive rights. As I responded to you earlier, so much of our wealth is in the hands of a very few. This is not a feudal society where the lords set all the rules. Unfortunately, powerful special interests have influenced govt policy to the point that the historical hardworking "haves" have become the "have nots." This dichotomy is the widest it's been in about 100 years. We elect our government and y ou get to vote. Obviously you don't like the current admin.
FebMarAprMayDec: Trickle down economics simply does not work, and neither does allowing interest rates to go through the roof. We used to have laws against usury. It's not just the unemployed who don't have or can't afford insurance, it's the working poor, and now increasingly the middle class. Insurance cos are a growth industry because they get to charge whatever they want yet provide fewer benefits. Every year our benefits get cut. I've reported double-billing and the insurance cos just don't care.
FebMarAprMayDec: And not only have benefits been cut over and over again, just don't get sick. THEN you find out how little your insurance really covers. They find all sorts of ways to exclude costs so they don't have to pay. The medical model and how you pay for it needs a major overhaul. The pay-for-service medical model and fear of being sued means doctors order all sorts of tests that are not necessary. The money is not being taken from regular people. In fact we are taxed LESS than we have been for years.
FebMarAprMayDec: I beg to differ. We've done a lousy job of educating youth about sex and sexually transmitted diseases. When I was growing up nothing specific was discussed. A study reported this week found that adults don't discuss condom use until kids are 17, yet by that time 40% have already had sexual intercourse. Research shows that kids who are informed about sex and birth control wait, on the average, at least a year longer than their peers to have sex, and they are much more likely to use protection.
FebMarAprMayDec: There were much bigger changes going on in the 60s that swept the country and the world which affected youth's opinion about sex. Unwed mothers, once heavily stigmatized, were sent away to keep it secret. Others would seek out illegal abortions and some of these women & girls died. I'm not at all for single parenting as a life-style choice or for having sex at an early age, and certainly not irresponsible sex ever.
FebMarAprMayDec: Insurance companies don't have to cover the cost of contraceptives. How's that for stupid? Even with the excellent plans I always had through work (including several Fortune 100 companies), the cost of birth control was not covered. So, insurance won't pay to protect those who are sexually active, yet they also won't help them if they are in a bind. Which is cheaper - paying for birth control or paying for live births or abortions?
FebMarAprMayDec: Can you people all be civilized? Being rude is not a substitute for a discussion. It's not just the unemployed who don't have insurance, it's lots and lots of people both middle-class and poor who can't afford or don't have coverage for various reasons, including preexisting conditions. And with the economy the way it is, thousands of the unemployed would be working if they could find a job. 1 in 4 people in Houston are uninsured yet 88% of them are working. It's easy to blame, but not nice.
ObamaEqualsStupid: blah blah blah you moron, get a life.
FebMarAprMayDec: And how brave would you be if you actually had to talk to me face to face? What are you so angry about? You must feel powerless in your life. People who insult others do it because they feel powerless or aren't smart enough to present a reasoned opinion. Have you considered counseling? I feel sorry for you.
ObamaEqualsStupid: Oh, you're the guy who wants to beat people up over the internet! Nice . . .now you've convicted my theory that you are a total sociopath! You should google 'how to accept criticism like an adult'. Want to meet face to face, hop in your queer hybrid and haul it on out to NJ! Let me know when you arrive!
FebMarAprMayDec: This from the guy who is calling everyone names and insults, including ethnic slurs? You miss the point of what I'm saying. It's not me who's hiding behind anonymity. It's you. I asked you to be civil and you are calling me names. I'd be happy to debate differences of opinion with someone who can be rational and stick to ideas rather than resort to childish name-calling. Please look up the word "projection," and while you're at it, you should look up the meaning of "sociopath" too.
ObamaEqualsStupid: Now you're a PhD, amongst, I'm sure, a mass of other fine achievements in your noble life. Get a life bro, like I said, blah blah blah...that's all I hear from you. Love the 138 posts you put up though, I wonder how many times you write lovey dovey e-mails to all of the girls who have dumped your pathetic ass? It's a pattern, I see it in your kind all of the time. Take my advice and google 'how to handle criticism like an adult'. For you, I want you to do it for you. Change, yes you can!
FebMarAprMayDec: Again, look up the word "projection." I don't feel criticized by you because that would require taking you seriously. You obviously feel criticized by me. All your anger is really interesting. Who are you really mad at? Yourself? Your parents? Your station in life? I wonder what happened to you in your life. If you are uneducated and feel resentful toward people who work(ed) hard to learn, that's really sad. And by the way, I'm sorry to disabuse you of the notion, but I'm actually a woman.
ObamaEqualsStupid: I'm just wondering what sort of time horizon you're working with on making something out of your life. Sooner, hopefully, rather than later, the revelation that your douchebag irony and witty clever banter is what has gotten you to where you are in life...reflect.... Your attempt to converse in a manner similar to Howard Stern interviewing a rebellious eighteen year old stripper is amusing, although reeking of a pathetic, something out of a community college psychology prerequisite course.
ObamaEqualsStupid: I am going to take a juvenile stab here though. Are you pushing for abortion legislation to somehow justify your slutty behavior as a youngster and the babies that you murdered? Just checking..... =)
FebMarAprMayDec: You can look up mysogynistic too. I feel sorry for you. You have no idea who you are talking to, and you just look foolish. There's a name for the people who exhibit the kind of behavior you do on the internet - trolls. It's been fun but these silly rants of yours have gotten tiresome and boring. Sayonara.
ObamaEqualsStupid: Ah, the classic mechanism of placation over reality. My rants aren't silly....they are true, and you let your brain trivialize disturbing actualities. You can label the sadness of your life as my 'silly rants', just line them up with your 'silly abortions' and Obama's 'silly deficit' and 'silly Conservatives' ....now go listen to some new age tunes, burn some incense, flip through your new yoga magazine.....Anything to get your mind off of the ugly reality you have made your life.
ObamasLipsAreMoving: Debbie Wasserman Schultz knows nothing. Robert Lowry will be taking her place for Florida's US Congressional District 20 in 2010. lowryforcongress(.)com Wasserman-Schultz is finished. Be gone, Debbie, be gone!
