Markings of Werner Voss' Albatros D.III plane Video

This is to finally settle a discussion about the markings of Werner Voss' plane in the movie "The Red Baron"

It had two swastikas painted next to the hearts which were removed from the plane in the movie for unknown reasons.

The display of the swastika is NOT forbidden in german tv nor in movies running in german tv or books.

In my opinion, the makers of the movie removed the two swastikas to simply circumvent their fear that the audience might get a wrong impression about Voss.

A pathetic decision reflecting the ongoing demise of educational aspects in war movies over pure action entertainment.

The swastika was a widely spread and popular symbol before Hitler and the nazi party choose it as their official symbol and gave it the bad reputation it has today in many parts of the world.

In german and scandinavian culture, the swastika was a symbol of luck. Thats why Voss and many other soldiers in ww1 painted it on their planes , tanks and automobiles.

It is still of high religious significance in Asia, for instance in Dharmic religions like Hinduism or Bhuddism and of cultural signifance to Native Americans aswell.

Before the nazis, it was as common as a arrow , circle, a heart , a triangle or any other popular military unit decal or decorative marking.

The bad reputation it has today was ,of course, completely unknown back then.

0n0a0m0e: the swastika is a symbol of peace in the hindu religion but people demonised it after hitlers use of it no idea why they would have taken an original swastika out.
Celeon999A: Most people dont know that. I think they've taken it out exactly for that reason. To cumbersome for them to actually teach the audience a bit of history in a movie about history. Love story bullshit to get more women to watch it is more important to them. They dont even try to teach something or clarify misunderstandings anymore. Thats what pisses me off. They just circumvent the "danger area of misunderstanding" and have no problem with letting people stay historically uneducated.
