Nick led me to the lake inside the huddle of trees. It was, as he'd already said, a small lake. It was as if it had originally been large, but had somehow been cut in half. Nevertheless, it was definitely big enough to accompany both me and Nick.
I glanced behind me, to be sure no one could possibly peer through the trees and see us.
When I felt reassured, I slowly waded into the water. It felt torturous against my freezing skin, but luckily, today was a particularly warm day for late January, so I grew used to the temperature.
I turned my head as the water came up to my waist, and noticed Nick still on solid land, shedding his shirt.
"Umm..."
"What?" Nick said, grinning as the rest of his clothing was removed. "You take a bath in your clothing?"
"Well, I-" I swallowed and looked away from him. "I just thought-"
"You're not uncomfortable, are you?" Nick interrupted sweetly, plodding through the water until he reached me.
I shrugged, a bit unsurely, and reached for my shirt, pulling it over my head. My pants followed shortly after.
Nick smiled and pressed his forehead to mine, after slithering his arms around my bare waist. His skin felt warm against mine compared to the chilling water, which was comforting.
"So...I was thinking about...what you said," I told him, flinching slightly as he kissed just above my chest.
"About being a slave?"
"No." I shook my head and pushed him away gently. "About...being a virgin."
Nick blinked, suddenly looking nervous.
"I said I wasn't a virgin."
"Yes, and you lied."
There was a pause.
"What?"
"You said you lost it to Emily. But you didn't, because you ALSO said that Emily was a virgin when Kevin and Joe...." I cut myself off, and stared up at him grimly.
Nick scratched his head indecisively before smiling.
"Fine, you got me."
"So you ARE a virgin?"
Nick's eyes flickered away from mine.
"I thought you wouldn't like me if I said I was one...."
I laughed and lowered myself into the water, so that it rose just above my neck.
"No, I still like you," I assured him.
"Really?" he asked, following my movements.
I chuckled and pecked his lips sweetly.
"Why does it matter if you're a virgin?"
Nick shrugged sheepishly.
"I don't know.... I just thought you'd mind...."
I laughed again and shook my head lightly.
"Of course I wouldn't mind." I hesitated. "I'm a virgin too, you know. And I think it's kind of sweet.... I bet your brother's, uhh, have sex every night."
Nick snorted and brought his body close to mine.
"They do. They get whatever girl's they want, because slaves that have sex with them get special privileges, and almost all of us want that."
I sucked in a shallow, shaky breath.
"And if they don't agree they rape them."
Nick cocked one eyebrow and nodded.
"That's right."
I suddenly felt like I'd been punched repeatedly in the stomach.
"Right..." I murmured shakily. "So you never...raped anyone?"
Nick shook his head reassuringly.
"Never. That's horrible. My brother's used to invite me to, but..." he cut himself off, then picked up his sentence at a different place. "I couldn't ever do that."
Smiling, I clutched Nick's waist in my hold.
"You were always the nicest."
Nick shrugged indifferently, although he obviously disagreed.
"So...I've got a question," he asked, changing the subject abruptly.
Automatically, I bobbed my head.
"What is it?"
Nick hesitated, rubbing his hand up and down my skin from beneath the water.
"I said I loved you.... Do you...love me back?"
