New research strategy needs to be part of longer term commit Video

The new DFID research strategy runs from 2008-2013. DFID Chief Scientific Adviser Sir Gordon Conway explains that the timeframe for research is important. Some things can be done quite quickly (4-5 years or so); some research, such as a vaccine for HIV/AIDS or low carbon energy production, will take quite a lot longer. 'Those big problems are going to be a major challenge for us over the next 10-15 years.' DFID's strategy on research will therefore 'undoubtedly need to go on for another 10,15 years, producing the kinds of goods that developing countries need.'
