Schell City United Methodist Women Rummage House Fire
Sharon, Schell City MO clerk also fire board secretary was with the first fire truck on the scene. She told us on Tuesday what happened.
Losing a fire fighter involves a lot. He was the mayor of Schell City MO.
They saved the church. We called for El Dorado MO and Walker MO fire departments to come and help us.
We lost two buildings. It started in a house that was being torn down. The other one was the Methodist Women's rummage house. They lost everything in it. If people lost their homes, they could help with clothes, utensils, pans and things like that. They lost everything.
Sharon said she had no information from the investigation, which suits her. She said, I haven't been called to be interviewed and that's OK, too. I do know they've been calling a lot of people in to interview.
She said about the rumors, There must be 55 million of them.
She said the city has an ordinance that a house must be down before it can be burned legally, and these were both standing houses.
We got the page at 10:54 p.m. and the back of the old house that was going to be torn down was fully engulfed.
She said that because it was July 4, many of the 12 to 15 volunteer firemen were scattered. One was in Rockville. One in Nevada MO. One in Branson MO.
Then Walker and El Dorado came in and helped us.
The fire chiefs got together and decided the rummage house should be knocked down to save the Methodist Church, which was built in 1878. We called Broc. He came up with his backhoe and knocked down the rummage house and saved the church, I believe.
Owen Elliot, (the El Dorado Springs fire chief) he was there. I'm vastly impressed with that gentleman. He helped us a lot. I just can't tell him how much we appreciate him.
The fire chief was gone. And the assistant fire chief went down. So Good Old Boss took over and I know absolutely nothing. I'm just good for calling the electric company, getting the owners there.
It was just a night that nothing went right. Nobody was where we needed them. Owen did a good deal. He got some trucks over here. He's the one, along with three or four others, who said, `We need to get that building down.' So they put their heads together and they did it.
