OCTOBER 2, 2009
I felt a nudge at my ribs, a jab at my shoulders. Startled, I cracked my eyes open to see Miley and Selena hovered over my bedside, a police officer at their side. How embarrassing; I was just dressed in boxer shorts and a long sleeved shirt, a padded (not cupped, unfortunately) bra that sagged my boobs down. I bit my lip as I slipped my sandals on, following them into the living room. I knew what he was here for. It wasn't the first time William Hamilton came at the wee hours in the morning with a woman I had to call my mother.
She was rocking back and forth, her knees brought up to her chest. Her lips were fragile, thin. Her hair was greasy and gray at the roots. She was only forty-two. How could booze and cigarettes make her look like she was eighty?
The bags underneath her eyes were noticeable, black. I sighed, rubbing my temples between my fingertips. "What happened this time?" I whispered groggily.
William put his hands to his hips and went from Miley, to Selena, and then back to my mother before glancing back at me with his sorrow-filled eyes. "I'll let it go this time, but next time I find her drunk on a scooter, leaving a bar at two in the morning, I will lock her up, Demetria."
I nodded, my lips chapped with unspoken words. "I'm sorry," I choked out as I escorted William to the door. "I should've known, I was working—"
He held a hand to silence me. "There's no need to apologize. There's nothing you can do." With a small grimace to my sisters and me, he left quietly.
When I went back to the living room, my mother was stumbling forward, clutching onto Selena. Petrified, I pushed Selena away. Selena might've been my age, and my fraternal twin sister, but she was afraid of her own mother. The alcohol left scars in our childhood; scars that could never be patched up to disappear.
"H-honey," my mother, Delilah, stammered, "you know I didn't mean it."
Miley flinched, moving backward. "I'm going to bed." She took Selena by the shoulder and they walked out, leaving me with the crap to clean up—the crap my mother always left sagging behind, expecting me to tidy up for her.
"Of course," I replied dryly. "You never mean to do anything."
She smacked her lips together, her trembling, weak fingers coiling around another bottle of sherry. Quickly, I smacked her hand down and snatched the bottle. "This is what's killing you!" I hissed. "And don't you dare make me raise my voice, Mom. Because you know, I would have your ass out on the street in a heartbeat." With a slight pause, I turned my back to hers. "Goodnight."

"She threw up last night when you went to bed," Miley informed me as she tied her apron around her wool sweater. "I cleaned it up. Didn't want to wake you."
"How pleasant," I snapped sarcastically, punching in my card, clocking in my arrival at work. "That's just so lovely to know, coming into work on a cold day, right? Having to find out your own mother could've been arrested—"
"Yeah, well," Selena sighed, cutting me off. "Think of it this way; she wasn't."
"But where the hell could she have gotten a scooter from?"
I sighed, shaking their theories off. The last thing I needed was to go to my job at Starbucks with the thought of my mother trailing along on my shoulders. That was the sole purpose as to why we drove half an hour away from our apartment to this job every day, including Sunday; to get away from her during working hours. "Just get to work," I ordered my sisters the second our boss, Laura, came in.
I went to the register, pushing a lock of my hair out of my face and tucked it behind my ear. As I yawned, I heard the jingle of the bell from above the entrance door shake, ringing into my ears. The usual customers were coming—the business tycoons who ordered their cappuccinos and biscotti while typing up reports on their expensive laptops; the teenage students who came in for some java to wake them up from their hangover from last night's party; and the poetic Goths who came in and sat at their usual corner, the darkest part where less sunlight hit the room as they jotted down inspiration for new, creepy poems.
But then there was that normal jogger—the one with the normal morning scruff, normal hair, and normal brown eyes that turned a golden crisp, autumn color whenever the sun hit them at the right angle.
He was the normal guy, and I was always looking forward to see him come in.
Ijustwannacomment121: I'm not a hater, but I can't STAND depressing stories. I mean, a sad character saved by love or a couple sad parts in a story to spice things up and add some drama is fine, but a WHOLE story where everytime something depressing happens, it makes ME depressed. But otherwise it was good. ;) No, really I likes it a lot. I will keep reading this story because I'm excited to see where you could possibly take this plot next, ;)
