Peter Atkins - UCC Atheists Feb 2010 Video
Peter Atkins is a professor at Oxford University and a prolific writer and debater. He argues that science and religion are incompatible. He will be debating at UCC Atheist Society in February 2010.
Matur1n: Science and religion go hand in hand beautifully. Science simply helps us understand God's handiwork better.
pobanmanu: Believeing that water molecules could be turned into wine by devine power, dead could be resurrected, blinds could be healed by divine power, snakes can speak, there are winged horses that can take prophets to heaven, earth is flat, etc and anyone who doesnt believe this will have their body applied into extreme heat for infinite time after they are dead. Well do you really want these theory to go hand in hand with the SCIENCE???
Matur1n: So you are of the opinion that science tells us that there is no hell for our souls? Can you cite me to a scientific study of that? I would love to see that one get through an institutional review board. Science deals with the natural, not the supernatural. That's why science and religion complement each other so well. There is little conflict.
pobanmanu: Do you know where the heck the hell is located?? Is is located in the universe or multiverse or cosmos??
Matur1n: I don't no where it is located or even locatable. Also, we have no evidence at all for the multiverse. It takes as much faith to believe in a multiverse as it does to believe in God. The way hell is described in the Bible, it doesn't sound much like a physical place, e.g. no atoms, energy, space or distance. But it doesn't really matter, it is a supernatural concept. It may be true or it may not be. But in no way is it in conflict with science, but you seem to think science has studied it.
PriestDuren: i'm mormon and I like this guy. for his scientific knowledge I mean.
greenflash4: What do I think of the arrogance from this nitwit? You're wrong! It is amazing how a person who claims to be so educated can be so closed minded. By the way, Peter has a religion he follows....it's called Blind Science.
josephjstern: The expression "blind science" is self-contradictory, and debauches the very concept of scientific inquiry. The dismissal of science as just another form of religion is an old and appallingly cheap piece of rhetorical sophistry that is very easy to see through. Education serves both to open and to close the mind, as appropriate. When the relevant observations overwhelmingly support one among several possible explanations, the educated take this seriously and proportion their belief accordingly.
