Liberty for the Mandolin Cafe Video
Liberty is fine old tune in the key of D and just playing it make you think of being free -- so I am happy to post this tune on the 4th of July and I hope that I do it justice.
The tune has many names like Reel de Ti Jean (in Canada), or Raccoon and Possum, or Liberty Hornpipe.
I think of it as an old tyme tune but the bluegrass players love it too and they really bite into it and play it HOT.
Liberty is usually played in a standard tuning (e.g., GDAE on the fiddle or mandolin) and an AABB format.
The Fiddlers Companion says that the first recordings of Liberty were by Texas fiddler Bob Wills and also by the great Nashville session fiddler of the 1940s, Tommy Jackson.
Liberty is extremely popular and widely played and it is one of 100 essential Missouri tunes listed by Missouri fiddler Charlie Walden.
Like I said it is a fine tune if you want to be an American old time player you would be wise to learn Liberty because nearly everyone you meet will know it!
Played here on a 1919 Gibson F-2 mandolin
sabbia12: very good
legendofthelake: what's making the beat in the back? btw, rhytm here is better! hugs Lisette
Mandolin1944: Thanks much for the comment and for listening.
Mandolin1944: Hi! Thanks -- I am using a program called TabEdit to do that. It allows me to write or edit notation or tablature -- then I can add in a basic chord and beat lines. But it is not easy to control -- I have to kind of jump in to the tune on the fly -- otherwise you have to start both the computer and the recorder then grab my pick! (<: I'm getting better at it but I need to buy a better program like Band in a Box. Cheers on your holiday!
sizefam4: Good job! This is a great tune and what a great day to post it! Happy Independence Day!
Mandolin1944: Thanks Gary -- yeah it was a great day to talk about Liberty!
billton12: very appropriate day to post "Liberty" as everyone should know what this day is really about. Great job!
Mandolin1944: Thanks a lot! You know in the interest of full disclosure I realized the connection when I uploaded -- I didn'tt really preplan it. Still I am very happy that it happened that way!
PAELofDI: If Charlie Walden says its an essential fiddle tune you better tighten that shit up buddy...
Mandolin1944: Ok thanks for your insight. I'm waiting for your version....
PAELofDI: Dont get butt hurt, its just a joke.
Mandolin1944: hmmm looking at my answer I must have had "thin skin" that day (<: mea culpa More to the point my playing ALWAYS needs to be "tightened up" -- never will be though.....as in "can we have a little talent in the monitors please?"
snake27317: good pickin buddy
