Synopsis:
Giiwedin (The North Wind), written by librettist and co-composer Spy Dénommé-Welch with co-composer Catherine Magowan, is an ambitious new opera that blends baroque and traditional Indigenous music and aesthetics with a powerhouse cast. Written in English, French and Anishnaabemowin.
Set in Northeastern Ontario prior to the development of the railroad, when the canoe and steamer were the common mode of transportation, the story follows a 150 year old Aboriginal woman, Noodin-Kwe, from the late 19th century to the 1950s, where a legacy is born from within the confines of an institution.
Graduating from being an adventurous Young Voices presentation to one of the most ambitious productions in Native Earth's history, this is the first major co-production for An Indie(n) Rights Reserve.
