Miss Carden's reading program is built on the following foundational elements: phonetic word attack skills, understanding of grammatical construction, keyword and title, vocabulary development, mental imagery, rhythm, and critical thinking. The students further develop these skills in their study of the classics. Daily attention is given to sequence, fluency, recall, categories, and organization of thought. Phonetically, these are closely integrated with the spelling sequence and grammatically integrated with the language work. This unity builds understanding, self-confidence, security, and success. At every grade level the reading and literature books combine to introduce approximately 2,000 vocabulary words each year. In order to strengthen both vocabulary and comprehension, Carden Academy assigns independent reading homework daily, beginning in the Second Grade, as well as required Summer Reading in grades 4-8. Miss Carden's ultimate goal was to teach a command of the language! Throughout the program emphasis is placed on thinking, enjoyment, and uplifting attitudes and viewpoints.
