Faces of Health Care Reform: Cathy Video

Cathy lives in Apple Valley, MN. A single mother of two, Cathy went back to school to earn her teachers license and has worked for the past three years as a special education and early childhood education teacher. Then, when her school system was hit with budget cuts earlier this month, Cathy lost her job, along with her health insurance.

Organizing for America has collected hundreds of thousands of personal health care stories. The grassroots effort is building support in communities across the country for a plan that adheres to President Obamas three principles for reform: lowering costs, preserving patient choice and increasing access to quality care.

yeungx: the argument is not free healthcare, it is affordable healthcare. We are still very far away from socialism. Just like helping food clothing, which you should be able to afford if you work, healthcare should be the same way.
pitis2flie: Seems like the GOP's only real healthcare proposal is "let's scare the population to death so that we can hand Obama a crushing defeat." Do you honestly see many of them trying to help the many American families and small businesses facing ridiculous healthcare costs, much less the 40+ million uninsured Americans? Stop eating up their rhetoric, they're manipulating you successfully. Get some facts and perspective that aren't RNC talking points and THEN make up your OWN mind. PLEASE
conservativo: 1. where's the kid's father? How come he isn't paying for his healthcare or insurance? 2. Sorry, there are struggles in life. Going to college, etc., used to be earned, but now it's seen as an entitlement. I want my kid to have everything, too, but I'm not asking anyone else to pay for it. And he has medical challenges too. You can't give better health care coverage to everyone for less money!!! More govt health care will guaranteed cause more problems than it solves. Guaranteed.
cinjef: Tyler, you mention God? 18000 moms, dads, siblings, grandparents, babies die per yr due to no insurance. According to CIA, US infant mortality is higher than Cuba's! Canada, England Australia all have public funded health ins Are they commies? Is it justice to let a young mother die of breast cancer which could have been cured by a simple lumpectomy? Is it just for the Health insurance CEO to make 20 Million per year while children die of treatable diseases? For goodness sake THINK about it!
cinjef: Consevativo where is your heart? According to the CIA Life expectancy in the US is 50th 2 years lower than in Burmuda! Our health system ranks 37th, lower than Colombia! Cuba has a lower infant mortality rate than we do ! Don't you wonder why? Don't you care? The US became #1 by building up a strong economic base of middle class consumers Let's see how fast we make it to the bottom by ignoring what must be changed. Use logic!!
conservativo: Yeah, people are lining up to go to Colombia and Bermuda for healthcare. Do you really believe statistics from countries run by corrupt dictators? Which country has the highest quality of life of those you mentioned? Have you considered that our life expectancy average is lowered by our high obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, which are products of higher standards of living? Don't ask me where my heart is and then say use logic. Our system does need change, but not bankruptcy!
mbsells77: Hey lady, they will let you die because you cost the government to much money.
cinjef: Conservativo, I used less developed countries to prove a point The statistics came from the Central Intelligence Agency Many of the countries listed above ours have as high of or higher quality of life Many other factors go into life expectancy: Knowing one's numbers Understanding the effects of high blood sugar Preventive health care Bush left us w/ 11.8 TRIL debt 260 BIL interest per year And you complain about 60 Bil per year to save lives? Empathy and logic are not antithetical!
cinjef: The Bill States "such consultation shall include the following An explanation by the practitioner of advance care planning including key questions and considerations important steps and suggested people to talk to an explanation by the practitioner of advance directives including living wills and durable powers of attorney and their uses an explanation by the practitioner of the role and responsibilities of a health care proxy" I will post a link to an explanation of lie being circulated
sophiemarie49: mbsells77, this is the second time you have made the same heartless statement to an honest American telling their predicament. What you are saying is untrue. A public health insurance option would give this family good, affordable health insurance.
sophiemarie49: Cathy, thank you for telling your story so we can see the real people behind the problems with our current health insurance system.
terrasears: my daughter looses her coverage at 18, and I am scared for her for the same reasons...
suziwyo: better read the bill folks before you start thinking mr obama is gonna save us all
hamshow: In this country if you have a serious illness watch out, you got to sell your home to pay the bill...
Piscivorus: This is really funny. I've never had health insurance, especially not from an employer. I never went to college. I never lived in a house. And If I ever had a retarded baby, I'd have an abortion. ...why do stupid people always have more money than me?
kukynphunt: Piscivorus, Maybe you fall under the category of a subhuman stupid
kukynphunt: suziwyo, Nice schill page assclown, did you get a copy of the bill from Ron Paul?
kukynphunt: Maybe America is evolving, it's called progress, and you can save your psychobable diatribe and Ron Paul can kiss my Universal American Ass.
kukynphunt: I go to Mexico to get my dental work done, and it's cheaper to get dental work there than it is in the US with insurance. Overhead for doctors and dentist in this country is so high, because of the cost of malpractise insurance, which is another private insurance company, it's about time they got checked. And if my Government did nothing to protect consumers, I would be pissed, but they are doing something finally.
barbcinque: Oh please....it will give us a choice: huge and expanded profits for the health insurance companies and the drug companies while continuing this pay-or-die system that has plagued this country for decades, a system that takes 20,000 lives a year, according to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Thats about fifty to sixty people who die every day. OR nationalized healthcare where the CEO and his greed are cut out of the equation.
unebonnevie: I have been seeing a lot vids on health care reform. I see a lot of people against the reform due to fear of the govt completely taking over the private sector in the medical industry, thus fears of stopping innovation. That's simply NOT true. The health insurers are out for profits--pure and simple. Cathy, make sure you get the HIPPA certificate from your old insurance/CORBA should you decided to move to a cheaper insurance. Just read about the HIPPA certificate, then you know.
blackman4544: We need the public option. The insurance companies will screw us without it. The Republicans want to help the rich and screw the poor. They dont care about the majority of people. They want to cut taxes for the rich, but then there is less money for social programs for the poor and middle class. Republicans don't want a public option, because there insurance buddies wouldn't be able to make as much money. To the blue dog democrats, dont be traitors. Get back to your democratic roots.
MrRegulator66: Coming up this week, August 28th on PBS, Money Driven Medicine ...watch it!
rjv1415: Welcome to the real world lady. A lot of us have been through hell with medical problems, the government will not take care of you. This bill that will be law, how much will it cost us? I have no job or health coverage they will will get no cash out of me forcing me to get coverage. Its better just to die and take something to ease the pain, rather then go into debt. This will cost us through higher taxes on things the middle class and poor people consume every day items, bet on it!
leeroynaggins: Lady, why didn't you get it together and get your own talk show? Then you'd be rich and you could afford health care. Teacher? Jeeze, lady, what were you thinking?
