Located at the southernmost tip of Malay Peninsula, Singapore is Southeast Asia's busiest port and home to the region's most vibrant multi-ethno-linguistic community. Founded in 1819 as the first British trading settlement in the region, Singapore became one of the most important commercial and military centers of the British Empire, and the hub of British power in Southeast Asia.
After gaining autonomy in 1959 and independence in 1963, Singapore became a republic in 1965.
Due to its limited natural resources, Singapore moved to develop itself into a manufacturing and trading nation. Driven by world-class modern education and relatively strong social welfare system, Singapore has been recognized as the region's first developed nation-state. Even with its overall modern urban architectural character, Singapore has been able to preserve the colorful colonial architecture shaped by its historical contacts with various nations and its multi-cultural heritage.
Singapore is one of the founding members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The Singaporean people, disciplined and bilingual, have shown that when it comes to economic development, a lack of natural abundance can be overcome with human resourcefulness.
