When Sweet Sleep Returned by Assemble Head In Sunburst Sound Video

Released in 2009 on Tee Pee.

AHISS is a psychedelic rock trio from San Francisco. They formed around the early 2000's and released their 1st album in 2005. This is their 3rd album.

AHISS were a pretty ballsy, loud, band before this album. On "When Sweet Sleep..." they really harnessed the thunder and tamed the maelstrom a lot. Here, they concentrate more on lush songwriting and vintage song structures. Sure, there is still plenty of guitar solos and fuzz to be found, but they've taken a less obtrusive, more traditional approach to it.

They've also added a small army of guest musicians and multi instrumentalists to pitch in. Other instruments they've incorporated to expand their sound include theremin, ebow drone, violas, tamboura and a moog. There's also a lot more vocals on this album and reverb laden vocal harmonies, as well as back up vocals. It's pretty much impossible to determine what they are saying, but they sound really spacey and awesome.

The production is decent. Nothing sounds compressed. there's lots of fuzz and interstellar wind background noise. All the instruments have room to breathe and co-exist. The guitar is still the focal point but blends in pretty well with the rest of the band.

This album is definitely not the most original sounding piece of music. These guys do pay a lot of homage to 60's and 70's psyche / acid hard rock. I'm not sure if it's trying to capture the spirit of that music, imitation or just exploring a new direction for the band, but it works alright. The hazy melodies and meticulous songwriting help compensate for that.

If you like modern psychedelic bands like Black mountain, Black Ghosts, Wooden Shjips and older ones like Hawkwind, Blue Cheer, Crazy Horse, you might dig these guys.

subliminalduck: This sounds kind cool. There's another psychedelic rock band that just released an album on Tee Pee records that I've been hearing about called Naam. They sound pretty good. Have you heard of Naam at all? You might want to check them out.
YoureWrongImRight: Naam, eh ? I'll check em' out. I really like what Tee Pee records is about.
WillMillion15: Hey man I haven't really heard much music from 2009 besides hip hop and I was wondering what's your favorite albums from 09??
YoureWrongImRight: Oh, man, that will require a lot of thought.
WillMillion15: Alright, well maybe a video at the end of the year or something? Thanks for the reply man.
666Superrockstar: I like the epic artwork on this album. I'm a bit more of a mainstream guy myself but, I do however adore the occasional underground album, such as portrait by manson. Great review dude, where do you record your reviews anyway dude, it looks like an attic to me.
subliminalduck: From what I've heard of Naam so far they sound really cool. They have this sort of psychedelic stoner rock sound but I think that they're a lot more original and a little heavier than this band you reviewed. Definitely check them out. I think they just released their debut full length album a couple weeks ago. I'm planning on picking it up sometime soon.
canesrule96: best albums of 09' according to me would be Octahedron, by the mars volta Crash love, by AFI then the new alice in chains album ya know i havent heard much from 09'
Noyjeetut: I like their sound.
JGCSOUND: Sounds dope.
