Kevin exited the cluster of trees after a few more moments of prodding around.
Once he had vanished in the distance, Nick shushed me and said to wait until he made sure it was perfectly safe.
I paused for a few minutes, holding my breath most of the time, besides the occasional inhales in between.
Then, to my heavy relief, Nick finally ushered me out of the trees.
"Come here, Becca," he said darkly.
I clothed myself and stepped back into the light, brushing stray twigs out of my hair.
"Nick..." I murmured, noticing his somewhat angered expression. "Nick...dont look like that, please...."
"Like WHAT?" Nick snarled.
I flinched at his tone and replied carefully.
"Dont look like you want to end our relationship. Please."
Nick winced, as though pierced by my words, and stepped away from me.
"Youre going to get hurt. I told you this was dangerous. If Kevin hurts you..." He ended his sentence as teardrops invaded his eyes. "I dont know what Ill do if anything happens to you...."
"Dont cry, please, Nick," I begged, wiping a stray droplet off his cheek. "Stop crying, okay? Everything will be all right. We can work this out...."
Nick shook his head, and, almost violently, shoved me away from him.
"Get away! Becca, we need to end this," he snapped.
I shook my head desperately as I shakily got back to my feet.
"No..."
"Yes, Becca, I cant-"
"Nick," I interrupted, "I have a question..." I said, feeling tears erupt in my eyes.
"What?" Nick snapped, his tone caught somewhere between hostile and broken.
"Love.... When youre in love...do you feel l-like...you cant live without that special person? That you dont know what youd do without them, and you would do anything to...keep them close to you...?" I said, in a shaky, whispery voice.
Nick hesitated, smeared the wetness off his cheeks, and scrutinized my face.
"Yes, it does...."
Sniffling, I came close to Nick, carefully placing my arms around his waist.
"Then I think Im in love with you...."

"S-sorry?" I stammered, stepping sideways towards Joe. "You said...sorry?"
Joe nodded his head.
"Yes, I did...."
I shook my head, not understanding entirely. Had hadnt EVER said sorry to anyone before. What made me so special?
Unless...he honestly liked me.... Was that possible? Did he seriously think of me as a person, rather than an object, free to be played with?
"Sorry for what...?" I whispered, testing his apology.
"Im..." Joe closed his eyes momentarily, "Im sorry I raped you, okay!? I just wanted you so badly.... And you didnt want me! I dont know.... I really like you. I mean REALLY like you," he assured me, shaking his head, seemingly confused. "Ive never actually liked anyone before.... It feels...odd."
Struck-dumb, I stared at him, my mouth gaping.
Joe grabbed a hold of the moment and used it to his advantage, pressing his lips against mine.
Shocked, I pulled away, and he stared at me, hurt.
"Im sorry..." he murmured, stumbling away from me. "I should go."
"Wait..." Suddenly feeling a strange surge of desperateness, I gripped Joes sleeve, but he pulled away from me and started off.
"Oh...one more thing," he added, stopping abruptly in his tracks. "Please dont tell Kevin about this...."
I considered his plea for a moment. What if I refused to promise that? Id have Joe at my mercy. I could make him suffer if I told. He could feel all the pain hed caused me....
No! Ashamed, and thankful it wasnt possible for others to read my thoughts, I slapped myself mentally. What was I thinking? I could never do that to someone. I couldnt hurt someone like that.... I was the sweet, sensitive one.
And besides, hed said sorry. It was just up to me to forgive him....
I just didnt know if Id ever be able to....
"Okay," I agreed quietly, "I promise...I wont tell him."
Joe smiled gratefully and gently took my hand in his, then brought his mouth to my skin and kissed it.
"Thank you, beautiful," he complimented, before flashing me a grin and leaving me, isolated, in the chilling January.
