The Teddy Bear Picnic with the Teddy Bear Band is 6:30-8 pm. Tonight at the Eiden Homstead, 101st Avenue and Noble Parkway in Brooklyn Park.
A safety camp for New Hope and Crystal children entering grades 3-5 in September is 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Aug. 11-13 at Civic Center Park, 4401 Xylon Ave. N. in New Hope.
Last night the Anoka-Hennepin School Board approved resolutions for elections this fall. Filing for three board seats is open Aug. 25-Sept. 8. The open seats are in districts 3, 4 and 6, which John Hoffman, Michael Sullivan and Kathy Tingelstad currently hold. District 3 covers Coon Rapids, Champlin and Dayton; District 4 includes Andover, Burns, Ham Lake, Oak Grove and Ramsey; and District 6 encompasses east-southwest Coon Rapids and Andover. Each position is a four-year term.
A levy renewal will also be part of the general election Nov. 3. If voters don't pass the renewal it means cutting another $8 million from the district's budget.
Dr. Dwight Townes was honored at the Golden Valley City Council meeting Aug. 4 as the first recipient of the city's Envision Award. He is credited with conceiving, planning and coordinating the Highway 55 Lilac Planting Project, beginning in 2006 and culminating with the first phase in October 2008. The second phase is slated for Sept. 26.
Sales of Blizzard treats at the Dairy Queens in Brooklyn Park, Golden Valley and Crystal on Thursday, Aug. 13, will benefit Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare through Children's Miracle Network. Gov. Tim Pawlenty has officially declared Aug. 13 "Miracle Treat Day in Minnesota. Dairy Queen stores will donate $1 per Blizzard treat sold on that day to the Miracle Network.
Brooklyn Center currently has openings for the Brooklyn Center Financial Commission. This is a voluntary position. To qualify for membership, you must be a Brooklyn Center resident while serving on the commission and have an interest in the financial operations of the city. Interested persons can obtain an application at Brooklyn Center City Hall at 6301 Shingle Creek Parkway in Brooklyn Center or call City Clerk Sharon Knutson at 763-569-3300. The final appointment will be made by the Mayor and City Council.
