Khi'ai & Breathing practice - and some thoughts. Video

A salute to Gordon; and some words on what's been going on lately. Please read the full description.

In my eyes, Gordon caught a lot of hell, so I figure I'll show my appreciation with a video for him, as well as a salute, and emulating his two-handed cut in my own way. No matter what, We care about you, Gordon.

Yes, sometimes when I'm having a rough day, I like to call my strikes. It makes me feel as if something, despite anything else went exactly right, at least in terms of result.

I know my Khi'ai sounds gruesome, but I attribute that to my smoking habit, my stints in a few heavy metal bands, and in one or two cases, the blending of the music and audio by windows movie maker.

Call me what you will, Trolls - That makes me Cutting in the yard on tape, and you wasting time calling me something to equal effect of "N00B".

crazycolerogers: great vid. my friend kiais like that
CoffinPuppet: Awesome TFD! Don't let the Comic bookstore Samurai get to you.You are cutting as they flap their gums.Who is perfecting his art? You.These trolls and sycophants are only feeding an ego, and kissing ass while you better yourself.Don't let the bastards grind you down man! Narutards FTL mwahaha!
Jeeperrandy: Great video. Your swordsmanship is definitely improving. That reverse-grip cut was sweet. Cheers.
TerraFirma369: When we learn to chanel our emotions towards positive ends, we come to a step in the path to knowing our Selves better. By achieving this truth, and hopefully continuing it's practice, you have found a pearl of wisdom that will beter not just yourself, but all of those around you. Excellent cutting, as well! Peace.
Hazamayakiba: I like the reverse grip work too...as well as that cool looking black n' white (old west) type filter effect of the video. 5 Geisha and a Bottle of Rice Wine !!!
CraneStorm: This was great, you are deadly bro, but cool with it to lol!
niterazor: ..hey Brian, many thanks, you are too good to me - You have always been a positive force in my life. You are an incredible and sensitive young warrior.. ..my idea of a very "real" martial artist. Re: the "Hell" - I've been gettin' that shit for years.... goes with the territory. ...thanks for the mention tho..... :+] btw, you are very much more improved in your sword-play than you were a few months ago - great to see!
senxo: Cut looked clean. Kiai's are yours. What I mean is that schools get all caught up in the traditional explanation of what A kiai is supposed to be, but in reality it becomes yours and you own it. No ones sounds the same. I personally just breathe and only Kiai when I perform Yang techniques. I personally know a chick who's Kiai's are what she is doing, " Elbow!", " Knee! ", " Groin!" Keyboard warriors would love to talk smack, but she destroyed 3 would be rapists in 4 seconds.
senxo: You are right. I had a teacher that used my emotions to channel destruction. After years of self discovery I found that the opposite can be true. We can channel our passion into anything we choose, both for good and for bad. The bad only serves us, the good, serves us and those around us.
dragontgreg: Very nice movie Brian and good way to channel negative energy into something positive...props to you. Please do post in IBYMA!
unclecow: nice work kiais are very important
TheForestDragon: Definitely; We should falcon punch each one of'em off the screen. LOL
TheForestDragon: Thanks, Randy.
TheForestDragon: You're both right. I'm really starting to think we all should collectively write a book.
TheForestDragon: Ohhh, to actually have some nice, hot, tasty sake right now... LOL Thanks, Haz. Wanted to do the blade justice when I finally caught it on film.
TheForestDragon: Ohhhh yeah. People often joke about "Funny Noises", or "Pointless yelling", but I have two things to say to those naysayers; One; Khi'ai isn't a "Sound you make". It's a "sound you let out." I basically discovered mine on what was my last cut of the day a couple years ago; it often comes out as "Sai!" or "Saiyaa!". But I more reserve that sort of thing for scream therapy, or when I need it. It's said one's voice is the sound of their Qi/chi/ki. Truth? I go from silk to sandpaper in .05, LOL
TheForestDragon: Means a lot from you, Gordon! I was trying to emulate some of your cuts; Perhaps I could go as far as to say I have Dan in Gordon-Jutsu? LMAO
TheForestDragon: Thanks, Demzly! Means a lot coming from you; I have more respect for you than I do a lot of martial artists. You're not afraid to look, or outright be silly, and your "Crane in a Storm" Gungfu is pretty sweet. Thanks, Man!
TheForestDragon: Thanks much, Greg!! I was worried most about how my Khi'ai might come off to some people whom practice more peaceful ways, as well as the explicit lyrical content of the music I used.
TheForestDragon: Yes sir, they are! I've been working really hard on it, man; Your compliments mean a lot to me, and inspire me to make my Khiai heard 'round the world!
senxo: 1) " It's said one's voice is the sound of their Qi/chi/ki. Truth? ", Qi is a vague term, in some styles Qi is taught this way, however when we teach at my school we define our terms so the student understands 1st, then they can apply it and build upon what they were taught. Believe it or not there are actually entire volumes dedicated to the various sounds and of a kiai, Like, " Hup, To, Sup, Sha, etc. " and it is treated like some secret way of breathing, actually this is unnecessary.
senxo: 2) A kiai comes from under your gut and is the sound that is made when this is compressed and it forces the air out through the body to the your mouth. The 1st time someone feels this its pretty cool. It the result of the entire body engaging in an action and its powerful. This sound is unique to everyone. I learned mine after I was instructed to breathe in, perform the move and expel all my air as I said " Ha!", funny how it did not sound like " Ha" when I finally got it.
senxo: 3) The Kiai just like life itself is something simple, yet we can devote an entire life time to growing it. Everything is this way. What you will find as you master things that it becomes demystified for you, yet in the eyes of another they see it as magical. The purpose of a teacher is to lead the student to the source of their own power so its no longer mystical to them because they can now do it. Then that student becomes a teacher and it never stops. This is the way it should be.
BalorCM2: That was powerful. More comming in PM when i wake up.
HashMajin: To me, a Kiai is the roar of the Beast Inside that must be denied in order to live in "civilized" society. It begs to be let out and, in the end, it won't be denied. Mine tends to come out as a loud,"HYOOOOOOO-AH!" Everyone should let theirs roar with pride! It feels good.
