Jannik, la oveja negra de la familia acaba de cumplir su condena por haber agredido brutalmente a una empleada del banco. Su hermano mayor, Michael va a buscarlo a la prisión cuando éste sale. La tensión que siente Jannik ante la presencia de su hermano es patente, ya que sus padres siempre le comparan con él. Michael, es el hijo ejemplar, padre de familia y con una carrera militar intachable, que tiene que marchar a una misión en oriente para luchar contra los Talibán. Mientras sobrevuelan la zona, el helicóptero en el que viajan es bombardeado y dan a Michael por muerto, aunque ésa no es la realidad. Este acontecimiento supone un punto y aparte para Jannik, que encuentra trabajo y ayuda a Sara en el cuidado de sus hijas. Mientras tanto Michael es aprisionado por los Talibán que le obligan a hacer algo que pondrá a prueba sus principios y que cambiará para siempre su vida...
Con está película Susanne Bier muestra una historia que trata de la rivalidad fraternal, y de como un acontecimiento político puede cambiar radicalmente la vida de muchas personas. En muchos aspectos se puede considerar una revisión del mito de Caín y Abel.
Susanne Bier es una de las directoras de cine más conocidas fuera de Dinamarca. Sus películas han sido casi siempre un gran éxito de taquilla, y aunque no siempre haya tenido críticas favorables, sería injusto tratarla como una directora de cine comercial, ya que los planteamientos de sus películas son muy interesantes.
Las tomas de Afganistán fueron rodadas en Almería (España). En Colombia se estrenó con el título: Verdades Ocultas. Esta película está disponible en castellano.

CineDanes: Firstly thank you for posting. If you really like Danish Cinema and/or Ulrich Thomsen, I advise you the following films: Inheritance by Per Fly. Adam's apples by Anders Thomas Jensen and Allegro by Christoffer Boe. Most of them have English subtitles even if you buy the DVD's in Denmark. He also appears in Nightwatch (the Danish version not the American remake), but he just plays a small part.

aeskild: Flickering Lights (Blinkende Lygter) is another movie worth watching, starring also Nikolaj Lie Kaas, who played Thomsen´s brother in the movie Brothers.

CineDanes: I think that this film can be seen as a variation of the biblical story of Cain and Abel or in the mythical foundation of Rome in the story of Romulus and Remus. In both of them there is a conflict between brothers, in which envy is plays an important part, and in the case of Romulus and Remus, politics is also involved. What I just write is a footnote, but actually if you think it closely, it's possible to write a thesis about this film with that subject.
