Cash for Clunkers aka Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS). The government-sponsored Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS) was created to spur new car sales and boost the struggling auto industry. If you own a car or light truck that returns EPA combined fuel economy of 18 mpg or less, you may soon be able to scrap that vehicle in exchange for a $3,500 or $4,500 credit toward the purchase of a more fuel efficient new vehicle. markVIIchick: A new car with a payment between $300 to $600, full coverage insurance (just as much) and pay for gas, AND rent/bills/food/clothing. gombet: Now gee let me think, now what has the federal government done in the past that has been totally successful? Well the most successful thing would have to be the Social Security System. If the Feds would have left it alone we would have a surplus today. But that's not the case, Social Security is safe today but will run deficits in just 12 years.. However what we now have, as recently quoted by Senator Orrin Hatch, Medicare on the edge of bankruptcy with $38 trillion in future costs.

grexample: C4C Dumb Economics: Any so-called stimulus program is a ruse. Government increases its spending only by reducing private spending equivalently. Whether government finances its added spending by hiking taxes, borrowing, or by inflating the currency, the added spending will be offset by reduced private spending. Plus, private spending's much more efficient than government spending replacing it because people act more carefully spending their own money than spending other people's money.

grexample: C4C: Smart Politics. If Congress taxes you $500 to create auto jobs, the victims are invisible and are only revealed by asking what you would have done with the $500 if left in your hands. Your own spending would have created jobs too but you can't point to who the beneficiaries would have been. They're invisible. Politicians love making victims of their policies invisible & beneficiaries visible because the beneficiaries will know who to vote for and victims won't know who to blame.
