Did Myths Blind Americans to 'Mistake' of Vietnam? - Neil Sheehan Video
Complete video at: http://fora.tv/2009/10/12/A_New_Cold_War_Neil_Sheehan
Journalist Neil Sheehan discusses his initial support for the Vietnam War, which he now views as a mistake. "We were supposed to be saving this country Vietnam, but what we were doing was blowing it up and burning it down."
-----
Sheehan will explain the notion that we've gone from a Cold War with the former Soviet Union to what he terms a "new Cold War" with countries like North Korea and Iran.
He will discuss in detail how close the U.S. and Soviet Union came to nuclear annihilation and how lessons learned from the Cold War apply to today's threats, including those from terrorists. - Commonwealth Club of California
Neil Sheehan is a former correspondent for The New York Times. Sheehan is also a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize and the author of A Fiery Peace in a Cold War.

MasterOhSo: I feel very fortunate to of found this channel....thanks for the uploads and spreading an interesting perspective...peace.
rudenoodle: He supported the Vietnam war? And he still is considered a relevant journalist?!? Why would anyone take his opinions seriously?
mattghtpa: Why is humanity destined to make the same mistake over and over? Altruism is a fantasy. 5Stars!
EUROTRASHSPAMMER: I think we all believed in the "Domino Effect" when all that crap first got started. We got sucked in through SEATO obligations and got stuck in the swamp. Shit, I went over there as John Wayne in '66 and came back as Abbie Hoffman in '68. It seems that everybody changed their views when Walter Cronkite said on the evening news that VietNam was a no-win situation and LBJ refused a second term.
EUROTRASHSPAMMER: It was a different time back then, rudenoodle.
the2012report: The international communist conspiracy may have been a myth, but the Soviet Union was not. Vietnam was a mistake because we weren't fighting the Soviet Union. In Afghanastan, during the Russia occupation, we finally got it right and that won the Cold War.
KhmerD0g: LOL. america is trading with vietnam today. vietnam is at peace with its neighbors now. they are rebuilding their country. yes, it is a commie country but it beats democratic elected government like Haiti, Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan and others.
EUROTRASHSPAMMER: LOL And...?
Mastikator: Maybe in 40 years USA will realize the very same about Afghanistan and Iraq. The wars was about helping them, but now all you've accomplished is committing genocide against them. When will people realize that violence is not the way?
KhmerD0g: and vietnam war was a big waste. nothing is accomplished, just destroyed lives and properties. the world is not perfect.
16242T: The more things change, the more they stay the same.
EUROTRASHSPAMMER: Well,(shrugs shoulders) it wasn't my idea anyway and it fucked me out of a couple prime years of my life. AT THE TIME, however, I felt the way this guy did. Yes, the world is not perfect.
truthadvocate: All those wars against Marxist governments & their allies, just to see our own government taken over from within by Marxist ideologues.
KhmerD0g: people grow wiser as they age. the military complex is always looking for a few good young men with similar ideology.
Darkhorse21x: The Armed Forces are the strong arm of the corporate empire. If a country won't submit to UCC (Universal Commercial Code) then they get invaded. It's not complicated. If you allow yourself to be deceived into joining the forces because you believe you are protecting your nation from "Communists/Terrorists/Marxists/Facists etc. then so be it. Wars will end when soldiers wake up to the fact that they are pawns in hands of their corporate masters.
originaljonesdotinfo: decades later, and Fora still poses this as a question. such are the power of these myths, that even when they are conclusively shattered by history they still hold some claim to reality.
ndyt: I wrote a high-school paper in 1985 saying the same thing this guy just said. I will go one further: Afghanistan and Iraq are this generation's Vietnam. How are they going to get here? Delta? Did the 911 hijackers come from there? No, they came from Saudi and Egypt.
geezzerboy: Steve McGarrett stopped the Communist invasion of Hawaii lots of time.
dwm1812: "All they wanted us to do was go home..." Not entirely true Neil - we did fight along side South Vietnam which was against Ho and the Communist Party. The South was corrupt and ineffciient but to say that "they" wanted us to go home is false and misleading. Why did so many flee the Country after the fall of Saigon? Because they wanted us to go home? Vietnam is a wonderful country now - and they have hot women. But Neil, you generalize to fit your agenda!
dwm1812: But Neil - Communism did spread throughout the areas you said it didn't. Communism invaded South & Central America - it is still there today though some say its Socialism. I am not against it - I wish you;d be a little more academically honest when you talk about "myths."
