Lost freedom cannot be regained only through politics President 3rd July 2009
President Rajapaksa has underscored that the lost freedom cannot be regained only through a political process. At a ceremony to pay tribute to the past Anandians who made a major contribution for the victory of the motherland, the President opined that a nation cannot be rebuilt from Pounds, Dollars and Rupees.
The President observed that lost freedom cannot be restored only with force of political means. They must work with foresight beyond, towards this goal. It was with such foresight that the Ven. Hikkaduwe Sumangala thera acted with when he established the Buddhist School. This School has given more strength than hundreds of thousands of slogans. Many other Schools were also started with Ananda. A leader should be able to create super human beings from ordinary masses. Rural youth can today serve in any Security Forces in the world. The President added that a part of ones life belongs to the country. The war heroes who are prepared to sacrifice lives should be honoured. He requested the people to commit part of their life for the country.

The Ananda Virusara Harasara ceremony was held at Ananda College this morning. On arrival, the President was greeted by Minister Susil Premajayanth and Acting Principal D.M.L.P. Dissanayake. After participating in religious observances, the President was conducted to the special dais. He then inspected the Colleges Cadet Corps. Thereafter the President was accorded a Guard of Honour by the Colleges Army, Air Force and Naval Cadet Corps. This is the first time that such a joint Guard of Honour was organised for the President. President Rajapaksa thereafter paid floral tributes to the Ranaviru monument of the College which commemorates war heroes who made supreme sacrifices in operations. Many past Anandians who contributed to the victory of the motherland received awards from the President. Among them were Defence Secretary Gothabaya Rajapaksa, Army Commander Gen. Sarath Fonseka, Navy Commander Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda, Director General of the Civil Defence Force Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekera, Major General Jagath Dias, Major General Kamal Gooneratne, Brig. Prasanna De Silva, Brig. Chagi Gallage, Rear Admiral Ananda Peiris, Air Commodore Krishan Yahampath and Senior DIG Mahinda Balasuriya. Past Anandians, Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake and Senior Presidential Advisor and Parliamentarian Basil Rajapaksa were also honoured. Ananda College offered a special memento to the President for his unmatched services in defeating terrorism. A book on the Anandian role on the military victory was handed over to the President. Ministers Dulles Alahapperuma, Prof. Tissa Vitharana, Rajitha Seneratne, P. Dayaratne and Geethanjana Gunawardena were among those who graced the occasion.
