11/9/09 Ron Paul: Healthcare Reform is Economic Malpractice Video

As Washington continues debating healthcare reform the rest of the country is primarily concerned about jobs and the economy. It is still uncertain what policies will be implemented, but I am certain about one thing: It will only further devastate our economy and our dollar.

The leadership has come up with a proposal they are confident will be what they consider fiscally responsible, only to have it scored as nearly twice as expensive by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. Estimates of past healthcare spending programs have been off by as much as 100 percent so there is no telling what the actual cost will be.

The past century should have taught us one thing: that government intervention is expensive. Government programs lend themselves so easily to waste, fraud and abuse. Combine that with overall inefficiency and it all adds up to a hefty price tag for the taxpayer, with not much leftover for actual services. An outright takeover of an entire sector of the economy, especially one as important as healthcare, is something that we just cannot afford for the government to do right now. Not to mention the fact that it is completely unconstitutional. But Washington insists on torturing the numbers and tinkering around the edges rather than facing this truth.

If healthcare reform does indeed pass, we should not be under the illusion that it will be free. The money to pay for it will have to come from somewhere. They say they will get the money from cutting waste, fraud and abuse, but all of that is seemingly intrinsic to government programs. Since they want to expand the governments reach we have to assume we will be trading waste, fraud and abuse for waste, fraud and abuse with a bigger budget. The powers that be have insisted the money wont come from higher taxes, it wont come from rationing of care, and it wont come from higher premiums. This can only then put more pressure on the Fed to print the money out of thin air. We already have a weakening dollar. They are accelerating everything that weakened it in the past. Adding this new, monumental pressure could very well be the straw that will break the dollars back.

Foreign creditors are already nervous about continuing to invest in the US because of our skyrocketing debt. The explosion of debt that is certain to accompany the enactment of this national health care bill can only add to that nervousness.

Ironically, enactment of the health care bill could help the cause of liberty by hastening the day when Congress is forced by economic circumstances to stop increasing the welfare-warfare state and return to the Constitution.

There are many problems with our current healthcare system, to be sure. There are many tragic stories to be told. However, we need to look at the root of our problems in order to address them properly. More government intervention and bureaucracy injected into healthcare will take a flawed system and make immeasurably worse.

xp19375: No, you don't understand what a free market is. If you read "The Wealth of Nations" by Adam Smith, he states that the free market needs three things: Peace, easy taxes, and justice. Since Somalia has none of those three things it is not a free market. There is a big difference between a warlord and a greedy CEO. If a CEO wants something from you, only you have the power to give it to him, assuming you haven't broken the law, but if the warlord wants something, you either give it to him or die
megarational: It's not the "government", it's the actual provisions of this bill, including for examples the focus on and increased funding of preventative & primary care medical procedures, electronic records to prevent duplication, a medical expert advisory board to study (not mandate) & provide statistical info. on what procedures produce the best results, and yes, a public option to compete with the private insurance companies.
megarational: Everyone needs to have access to affordable HC and everyone should contribute according to their ability. Lower income premium assistance is available through the bill. I am NOT in favor of the fine system, though. The most efficient and fairest way would be through the progressive income tax system. But even though that would be the most efficient system, GOP would sqawk "tax increase", so we are left with a fine system for those who don't want to have insurance.
mark1m: why cant a CEO kill me... because we have a socialized military. socialized military is not free market.
xp19375: It's not, and a completely free market has never been advocated. The government has a very important, but limited role - To insure justice and protect us from foreign invasion. The government has no business in things that can better be done by private companies.
freakawill2000: Everyone should pull their own weight. If people want to help others, that is their choice and I think it is wonderful. But forcing "generosity" is theft.
megarational: So repeal that socialist policy of "forcing" emergency wards to provide treatment. A nation where anyone, regardless of income, has access to affordable health care (not just emergency room stabilization) is something the nation could be proud of. Your attitude is something no one should be proud of. Under your system only the generous need contribute, the greedy need not.
mark1m: i agree. and if the free market could handle health insurance better than the government then i absolutely would agree the government should stay out of it. But as we can see from other countries... government can provide health insurance much cheaper. And you can say their healthcare isnt as good or whatever. But their healthcare covers everyone, for half price. If foreign countries doubled their healthcare spending to match ours... they would be vastly superior.
mark1m: forcing generosity is necessary to maintain a peaceful society.
MKeyserSoze: Bullshit. Typical democrat, the idea of charity is foreign to you...
MKeyserSoze: We do not have a socialized military, we have a welfare/warfare state driven by the military industrial complex.
poolshark73185: No, its not free. Its simply paid for your by the government with other people's money. Its not free.
77hawk77: 98% of people's welfare is payed for by the 2% richest people, who still have more money then most people so it's okay, why would i care, i live 10 times better then 90% of americans, enjoy your illusion of having low taxes means having alot of money, hah paying thease taxes mean i don't pay for all that stuff you have to do, and if i get sick it's never a problem, Ever.
freakawill2000: So legalizing theft is necessary for peace? That is a very strange comment.
freakawill2000: @megarational Emergency wards charge their patients for services rendered. So your point is? What worries me is you advocate legalizing theft. In a system driven by charity, greed runs rampant (i.e. communism). In a system driven by greed, charity is encouraged (i.e. capitalism).
megarational: Ron Paul is an honest zealot. Went down the drain in having enough people vote for him to make him credible. But reading the comments on this tread he obviously attracts more than his share of crackpots.
WorldTravelDude: Stop using Interstate Highway system. Take helicopter flights to work or wherever you have to go. Interstate Highway system is also a big socialist project built and maintained by "forced tax" from you.
WorldTravelDude: Stop using Interstate Highway system. Build and use your own highway to wherever you need to go everyday from your "charity".
werebear1: The people paying for it, namely the tax payers comprising the middle class, do not qualify and have to buy their own insurance; in other words they are picking the tab for the one third below them that do not pay taxes (including the 1/2 million people living there illegally) and they do not benefit form it.
mark1m: raising someones taxes isnt theft. Thats like saying a landlord raising rent is theft. You pay rent to live in the country. If you dont like paying rent.. you can leave the country. Just like you can leave an apartment if you think the rent is too high. If you want to live a luxurious lifestyle (ie better apartment) you have to pay more rent.
freakawill2000: @mark1m No. Raising taxes is not theft. Raising taxes and then giving that money to someone else is.
pikamann: You make us vomit. Bye
DemocratsTREASON: > pikamann : You make us vomit Don't leave before you clean up your mess with your socialist mop.
MKeyserSoze: Guess what, we had roads before the income tax genius boy...
MKeyserSoze: Bullshit. If you rent you can move. I can't move to any "untaxed" place in my own country.
