SP4449Warbaby: Well, the site DID say that the new management decided to keep the 4960 and the 29 for special occasions, so steam isnt really dead on the GCRY in my opinion but you never know.
martinlumber: It's really bad when I know that the last sound slip of the whistle was Shay 6 at the CSRR, with a MD Whistles Reading 6 Chime, the end of a grade crossing blow, with Danny S. at the throttle. Possibly during the Elkins trips? Dang...I need to get some sleep!! :)

trainmaster844: #18 was sold firstly to the Mt. Hood Railroad and she's now operating in Colorado on the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad. She was retired from service at GCRY in 2002 because she was too small for regular trains, which had become 8-10 cars long by that time...

trainmaster844: #29 might return... as for 539, she was placed up for sale not too long ago and #5 will remain on display at the Williams Depot...

HaloCE14: thats smart what they are doign with the conversion to vegetable oil, thats something I think Union Pacific does with their steamers.

gyjg6564167: 4960 will be running again later on this year for a Polar Express run. Believe it's in November.
KingofTomedy: On Extreme Trains, the steam train episode with Union Pacific #844 shows us that it burns old motor oil.
85mariafer: i heard they are thinking of using the steamers in more frequent special runs, but not all the time.
EverywhereWest: It sounds like they're keeping the steam engines in operating condition, so that's good, I thought they would be sold and who knows what would have happened to them. Even though the daily steam trains are probably gone, it really sounds no different than what the UP does with 844 and 3985. I hope to get down to the GCY someday and see 4960, that engine is awesome.
