GCW - 3D raytrace animations & images (1993) Video
Presenting more goodies from the 1993 "GCW" shareware CD-ROM, including some AutoDesk .FLI animations (such as the video's intro) -- which is such an obsolete format that I had to dig up an ancient Windows 3.1 program to convert them into .AVI video format -- as well as many spectacular raytraced images, which was the state of the art for 3-D imaging back then. Raytracing provides a photorealistic view of computer generated objects in space, but takes up a large amount of processing power to compute and render. Many of these images were created using AutoDesk 3D Studio and date from the late '80s and early '90s.
Musical accompaniment is provided from three Amiga .MOD songs: "Go-For-It," a.k.a. CAMBOD.MOD (a cover of the Kim Wilde song "Cambodia"), "Let's Swing It," and "Electric Church," featuring an unusual real sample of a Hammond B3 organ with Leslie!
batterymaker: I'm counting my grey hairs as I watch this--hard to imagine some of these images are twenty years old....
ess1898: Wow I remember a lot of these from when they were brand new. You just made me feel really old today. I particularly liked the BBS advertisements. I really miss the old BBS scene. I still think ray tracing is cool even almost a full 20 years later.
themaritimeman: Wow, it looks like 20 years ago 3D rendering was already progressing at the speed of light! A lot of those pictures seem to be centered around spheres...
JeffN727: Cool! The last song is a version of Deep Purple's "Hush"
ThisGuyFrritz: *** This comment is pretty much a continuation from the one I typed for the Vintage GIFs video. *** The CD-ROMs that my dad got were from the computer fairs that we used to go to. That was at the time when you could get a bunch of 3.5" disks for a cheap price. I don't know if we still have the old CD-ROMs. Maybe I'll find them and see how they work on my desktop with Windows XP as well as my laptop with VIsta. It would be interesting if I could share them.
MrKsoft: Wow this CD's got some pretty awesome stuff on it. Any chance of imaging the CD and uploading it somewhere? I'd like to get the original files of a lot of these.
