While commonly studied in families (e.g., diacylglycerols, glycerophospholipids, cholesterols), individual lipid isoforms display unique properties that differentially regulate a cell response to external and internal stimuli. These distinctive properties include transverse and lateral heterogeneities within membranes, differential activation of networks of target proteins, and specific chemical and physical mechanisms of action.
