You might think that the legislative committee that oversees the State Health Plan would know what was happening with the plan. But youd be wrong. Co-chairs Senator Tony Rand and Representative Hugh Holliman were surprised by a $300 million shortfall.1 Thats an awfully big surprise.
Now theyre asking taxpayers, retirees, and hardworking public employees to foot the bill, but theyre not asking for a dime from Blue Cross/Blue Shield—the nonprofit administrator of that plan.2
When Holliman was asked how much Blue Cross is profiting for administering the state health plan, he said, I cant tell you other than what they tell me. 3
And when Rand was asked to explain what proposed changes would mean for public employees, he said, I dont have a clue.4
Not very confidence-inspiring answers from two legislators charged with overseeing the state health plan.
Call Tony Rand and Hugh Holliman at 919-733-4111 and tell them to pay more attention to how our moneys being spent.
