President Rajapaksa has announced that the New Year will dawn with a new salary for the working class.
The President said there was an era when the country was divided through an agreement. The people were scared of bomb explosions. He expressed his gratitude to the support extended by the working class when the battle was launched to end this era. There was no other Government than the present administration which gave an ear to the working class. As the Executive President, he is not prepared to wait till a Budget is presented to find solutions to problems encountered by the working class. After the 31st of December there will be a salary increase. It would be effective from November this year. The President was confident that people would stand united to defeat the local and international conspiracies and support the Government.
The President was addressing the 7th Convention of the Sri Lanka Freedom Employees Union. It was held at Temple Trees. The President further emphasised that neither strikes nor threats are necessary to secure the rights of workers. Recalling that he had always responded to discussions called for by trade unions, the President observed that every decision was being taken, considering the future and the sovereignty of the country. Ministers Maithripala Sirisena, Athauda Seneviratne and T.B. Ekanayake and Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Employees Union Leslie Devendra also spoke. Western Province Governor Alavi Moulana and many trade union representatives were present.
