"Where do I put this note, Kevin?" I asked dreamily, still focused on Eliza.
Kevin held one finger up at me, telling me to be quiet for a second, then handed me a second piece of paper.
I peered at each of them twice. They were identically the same.
"Why'd you give me two of the same note?" I asked, puzzled.
Kevin sighed in exasperation.
"I don't know where Becca sleeps. She could sleep in her own cabin, or she could sleep with Nick each night, so put one note in each cabin," he explained.
I hesitating, repeating the information in my head, then nodded.
"And don't worry about Nick," Kevin added, as I was starting off. "Ill make sure he doesnt get near the cabins."

[Becca]

That night, after my chores had been completed, I felt sore. I'd had to work extremely hard today to make up for the time lost during the bath.
Fortunately, my quickness caused me to finish a while before Nick, so I went to the boy's cabin and sat there for a while, my head rested on his pillow-less mattress. I felt myself drifting into sleep as time continued on, and I started to get worried, wondering why Nick hadn't shown up yet.
I asked some of his neighbors, meaning the people in bed's beside him, if they'd seen him at all, but they said no. Anxious now, I sat back down on his bed, and my foot found a scrap of paper on the floor. I figured it must've fallen off the bed when I'd lied down.
Curious, I picked it up. I hadn't learned to recognize Nick's handwriting completely yet, but I was pretty positive it was from him.
The paper read, in colorful, berry blue ink;
'Meet me at the lake. I've got a surprise. Love, Nick.'
I giggled and stuffed the note into the rim of my pants. I would've put it in a pocket but, frankly, I didn't have any.
Quietly, I slinked past the beds full of sleeping slaves. Then I started off to the huddle of trees. The landscape outside seemed different at night. As I'd recognized before, somewhat eerie. But I didn't let that stop me. Surprise? That sounded cute. But it sort of made me nervous too, because of what I sensed it may be....
My feet suddenly feeling like they weighed a thousand pounds, I trudged into the cover of the trees. At first glance, I didn't see anyone, and then I spotted Nick, perched beside the lake, his ankles rested in the chilling water.
"Nick!" I called, rushing to his side. When I looked at him, grinning, I noticed tears dribbling down his cheeks. But when he glanced at me, they vanished.
"Oh God...Becca..." he exclaimed. As fast as his droplets had vanished, they came rushing back, pouring down his face. "Becca...I thought you...I thought they..."
"Nick..." I said, concerned. "What happened?"
"Kevin and...J-Joe," he half-sobbed. "I heard them talking earlier. They were going to use a note to lure you to them.... But I happened to be working by the house...so I heard." He hesitated. "But they wouldn't let me go to the cabin, so I wrote a note and asked a friend of mine to replace the one they'd put. But...I-I...didn't think...I didn't know. I...I..." his voice slipped away, and he just held me tightly.
"Shh," I whispered, slightly stricken myself. "It's okay, Nick. I'm here...they didn't get me...."
Nick cried for a while, but, eventually, his sobs quieted.
"You know," he murmured shakily, his mouth against my neck, "the note wasn't lying. I DO have a surprise for you."
I hesitated, my voice caught in my throat, before I choked out, "And what might that be?"
Nick grinned and slid a thumb lightly across my cheek.
"It won't be a surprise unless you close your eyes."

[Eliza]

Depression. Still. Although it had been brightened by Joe's apology.
Joe confused me. I didn't know what to think or feel about him.... All I knew was that I was puzzled by his heartfelt apology, and wondered if he really meant what he'd said.
But I didn't want to think about that now. I was too exhausted to think about anything complicated. I was at my cabin now, and I was ready for a nice, long sleep.
But my exhaustion was interrupted when I glanced at Becca's bed, and saw a note placed there.
I hesitated, but decided to pick it up in the end. I wasn't the best reader, but I knew my basics, so I was able to make it out;
'Becca, meet me in the fields as soon as you get this message. Nick.'
I don't know what overtook me, probably curiosity, but I soon found myself edging towards the exit, wanting to know what Nick and Becca were up to....
