Jean Goldkette Orchestra - I'm Gonna Meet my Sweetie Now Video
Jean Goldkette emigrated from France to the United States in 1911. He was originally a classically trained piano player, but his importance to jazz as a bandleader in the 1920s cannot be overestimated.
Goldkette actually had over 20 bands under his name by the mid-1920s, but it was his main unit (which recorded for Victor Records from 1924-29) that is the only one remembered today. In 1926 the band included Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Frankie Trumbauer, Eddie Lang, Joe Venuti and the legendary cornetist Bix Beiderbecke. Bix had a hard time with the Goldkette Orchestra. He was fired for his inability to read music and then re-hired after he learned enough music to get by.
The orchestra was among the best of the period, even defeating Fletcher Henderson at a Battle of the Bands contest in New York. In 1928 When the band started to have financial problems, Paul Whiteman hired most of the above mentioned musicians, and the band's later recordings are of lesser interest although Hoagy Carmichael is heard on two vocals. Goldkette also helped organize McKinney's Cotton Pickers and the Orange Blossoms - which later became the Casa Loma Orchestra. Jean Goldkette dropped out of the jazz business by the early 1930s, after that working primarily as a booking agent and a classical piano soloist. He died in 1962.
This has always been one of my favorite Goldkette Records, and after listening to it I think you will see why.
