Let's Discuss: Digital Distribution vs Distribution of Hard Media in Gaming Video
Hey all back from a little break with a let's discuss video.
Enjoy!
james42519: yeah i like hard media because i actually own it and can hold it and still play forever as long as i have something to play it on. this digital stuff is not always going to be there. you download something on xbox or ps3 and what happens in the future when they have new systems and don't support them anymore and something happens to a hard drive or something? sure you can re download stuff now but i know they can't do this forever.
transparencypro: the only other down flaw that you forgot to mention is that you can redownload it on the same account but if your system crashes or breaks you may have to call the company to allow it to download to your new system, and sometimes they will only let you have so many so if your system brakes 3 times that year, you may have a hard time getting those downloads of yours back.
IceDrake523: I prefer hard media. You have the physical object which I really like. But if you end up not liking it or don't want to keep it, you can get rid of it. You can't do that with digital distribution. Once you get it, it's yours and ONLY yours. You can't trade it, sell it, or lend it out to someone. Of course there are demos for you to try the game out first but not every game has a demo released beforehand and not every demo is an accurate representation of the game. Hard Media FTW
thebiolizard: hey dude, great to see new video =)
TameFan: i new video? can that be? i want the hard media. I dont feel that i own the games when i have them on a boring ass harddrive But the only thing that is good is that i dont take any place in the geek room
nicktendowii: great to see you back on youtube!! i am probably against digital distribution, one reason is that i like to collect games and build up a sizeable collection of games to display, another thing is, as you said it is cheaper to buy the games from a shop or online than pay the fixed prices that the companies make you pay. i agree with it for smaller companies that couldn't afford to make lots of copies of games to ship to the stores and cant be sure of sales. so in one way its also a good thing. :-)
Ch0coDK: Wow where do I begin. I am against digital distrubution for many reasons. 1) DRM, 2) No longer able to rent games/sell used etc. 3) I got Dead Space for the 360 Used for $8CDN I can['t do that with DD, 4) Companies can pull down the servers and take your games and thats the end, 5) Techinically you never own the game 6) You don't have the hardcopy to show off and many more reasons.
GamerBoyGU82: I dislike the digital distrobution route... You aren't actually buying the game, you're just licencing yourself to use it and some of these licences only allow you limited downloads of each file. so you have to continue to expand your storage. However, digital storage isn't a concern with hard media because you're purchasing the storage with the disc/cart. Also with hard media it's great to be able to sell a game after you have decided you no longer want it.
vipor29: i will always like the hard copies of games...i hope we dont go digital because like people have said,if the server goes down your screwed..you pay for a game and you can't play it anymore cuz the company went out of business...i will download digital when i need too but im still buying hard copies of games
ianwilson1978: Firstly- welcome back mate :-) Secondly- hard (physical) media all the way for me. I see the merits of digital media but I enjoy the experience of purchasing packaged games- and also like looking at them sitting nicely on my shelf. It's good for my OCD :-D
LeeMan00: I don't even like getting used games unless I get the manual and cover art, it just isn't the same without it. Digital is fine, but you can't trade it in or sell for some cash. It has its ups, but I'm not ready for it. Plus, games should be cheaper without physical media right?
The16bitwarrior: Welome back! I prefer physical media, I dont want want to be subjected to a fixed price. Digital download is fine for some thing like the PSP go but what about a full playstation 3 title at 25-50gb? Even at the fastest download speeds in the UK it will take ages but if you have a unreliable connection you'll never even download it.
DemonmachinE: MotherFUCK digital distribution as the primary method for getting games to the market. I will immediately give up on games when that happens... except if a new Diablo or Mana Khemia comes out.
scotdodgy: I'm not a fan of digital video game distribution and I hope the day never comes where that form is the most prominent way of distribution. It's a bit like how the music industry has been trying to create digital downloads rather than endorsing physical copies, I much prefer to get my music in it's casing, with cover art and the disc much the same to my preference with gaming.
Snestastic: Great to see you back Dan :) Ok well if they are gonna go the digital distribution route then I would prefer the three main companys and any companys that join the bandwagon in the future to offer both digital downloads and a physical media to please everyone as i for one will not use digital downloads as theres no point as I like to collect games as well as just play them.
Snestastic: I also think that blu-ray and dvd should be gone and they should create a High Def Cartridge thus cutting piracy into a very small section of the community :)
mooney12345678910: what will happen when the new consoles come will they still have the PSN store or the XBL market place? if so does theat mean that we will have to download all of the games we already have just to play them on the new system or do you think they will have a transfer system so we can transfer our downloaded game over to the new system. i think that's something to think about. plus since we use hard drives to download games to will do u think they will go to online storage to transfer old games
BoldNewTradition: Digital brand new games better be considerably cheaper if there's no packaging involved. Like a brand new game $60US would be like $30-$40 digitally. I think I would be in favor of that. But they better not try to sell a game at the same price digitally. That would be a blatant rip-off of the consumer.
BackForwardPunch: It sucks, but we won't be able to stop it soon! It's just not the same to have a digital file compared to having a REAL game!
DemonmachinE: I'm just hoping the PSP Go completely fails so that this concept of digital only consoles doesn't catch on.
wedotech: Did one of your cameras fudge up? Or are u just filming this on a different camera?
SuperDan88: Nah normal camera just so damned dark I had to record with the flash turned on >.>
cessnaace: Good seeing you again mate! :) I prefer having a hardcopy. I have bought hundreds of songs on Napster, and now at least half of them won't play. I get an error message that the media rights can't be verified. They used to play fine, and Napster says I'm outta luck. I can't re-download them. The same goes for games. Some that I've downloaded are only playable on this computer. If it dies, I'm outta luck. I want the games on my shelf! :) STAY AWESOME mate! :)
danthebusman: its both a good and bad thing really. it would be good as it should be cheaper to get a new game(no packaging etc.) and that with a disk you are limited to space so a downloaded game could be made twice as big for the same price. the bad thing is i cant buy it and display it on my shelf, and there would be no pre-owned games and in many years to come when these are considered retro there would be no physical software so no more retro. :(
Ravenprose: As a big supporter of Xbox Live Arcade, Virtual Console, and WiiWare, I like digital distribution, especially when it comes to older, hard-to-find games. I certainly understand the cons to it, and I don't see physical media going away anytime soon; but I definitely like the convenience of digital distribution.
