ONE OF THE MOST SENSATIONAL EVER!!!
Zenyatta, a five-year old filly, beat the boys and became the first female mare to win the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic. She was dead last early on, trailing 11 lengths off the lead with half a mile to go before her spectacular late finish to win the race.
Zenyatta was ridden by Mike Smith, and trained by John Shirreffs. She is undefeated in 14 starts.
A brief transcript from ESPN's broadcast: "This is unbelievable, Zenyatta, what a performance, one we'll never forget. Looked impossible, but it is Zenyatta still unbeaten under Mike Smith. What a dramatic performance, one of the most sensational ever."
Zenyatta's owners, Jerry and Ann Moss, purchased her for $60,000 at the 2005 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Zenyatta's dam, Vertigineux, is a Kris S. half-sister to three stakes winners and was a dissapointment on the racetrack while running for her breeder, Eric Kronfeld (Maverick Productions Limited). As a broodmare, however, Vertigineux has been a versatile producer. In addition to Zenyatta is Balance, by Thunder Gulch, who sold for $260,000 and went on to win five stakes and more than $1 million, including three grade I races. The dam also produced Where's Bailey, winner of the Remington Park Oaks in 2005. Vertigineuxs granddam is the well-bred In the Offing, a daughter of Hoist the Flag and the stakes-winning Tom Fool mare Mrs. Peterkin.
Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Moss. Moss, co-founder of A&M Records, named Zenyatta for a recording by the super-group The Police.

keybender: What's unbelievable is that those were G1 horses. Look at Zenyatta's earlier races against G1 and G2 fillies and mares, and even her maiden and allowance races, Z goes by them the same way. Even after this race, you wonder how good Z really is. How would she do at 12 furlongs or on the turf? With her retiring those questions will never be answered. I will say she is the best deep closer I have ever seen.

dhom100: where did her strength come from on the last stretch? the leading horses must have been so surprise how she came out of nowhere to zoom past them. most impressive win ever by any horse. RA will probably get horse of the year now that Zenyatta will be honored Lady Secret stake to be renamed after her.
