Gays in Prime Time Soaps Video

A look back at several moments from prime time soaps reflecting changes in portrayal of gay male characters on US network TV over the past 25 years.

The clips include:

* CELEBRITY (February 1984 NBC miniseries based upon Tommy Thompson's novel - Joseph Bottoms plays a married and closeted Hollywood star whose son (played by a young River Phoenix) accidentally witnesses his love-making session with a male lover)

* DYNASTY (ABC's #1 program in America in the 1984/85 season - Jack Coleman reluctantly took over the role of the luxe soap's resident gay character Steven Carrington who got to profess his love for a young PR assistant played by William Campbell in January 1985)

* I'LL TAKE MANHATTAN (CBS' March 1987 miniseries based upon Judith Krantz's novel - Adam Storke is powerful Amberville family's youngest child who ends up being manipulated by a male model hired by his evil uncle to set up drugs in his studio - the awkward hug the scene ends with reflects how gay intimacy was shown at the time)

* MELROSE PLACE (Aaron Spelling's outrageously shameless soap opera - unlike his fellow bedhopping heterosexual Melrose complex tenants, the show's resident gay character played by Doug Savant finally got to kiss a man only in May 1994, more than 60 episodes into the show's run. Unfortunately, fearful of advertiser and affiliate backlash FOX censored the scene)

* DAWSON'S CREEK (The WB's teen drama finally broke new ground in 2000 when Kerr Smith who played the show's gay character Jack McPhee shared a kiss with a boy which ended up being the very first prime-time gay male kiss in the history of American television) NOTE: This clip is taken from the episode "Promicide" which aired in 2001 and features a later kiss, not the first gay male kiss which aired in 2000 (and can not be seen in this video).

* DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES (In a post-Will & Grace TV world ABC's immensely popular dramedy continued to show gay characters in lighter tone, sending its troublemaking teen Andrew Van De Kamp proudly out of the closet)

* BROTHERS & SISTERS (ABC's critically-acclaimed star-studded family drama broke new ground in its 2nd season finale aired in May 2008 when its popular gay couple Kevin and Scotty tied the knot in a touching commitment ceremony).

PrittyPinkV: meeeee 222 =o
vixlad: thank you so much for posting this gay-themed clips. It has really made my day. Got anymore?
vixlad: Give us more! give us more!
protectorofillinois: I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE this video so much!!!! Melrose Place (the original 90s version, but the new one is good too) was (and still is) one of my favorite soap operas. I was actually upset when FOX-TV network decided to censor out the 1st man-on-man kiss (obviously they were too chicken to air it, due to the derogatory and demanding letters FOX-TV were receiving). I will always love Dynasty (Steven Carrington was my favorite!!!). Thanks for uploading this!!! 5 stars & faved :-D
Scrabbler27: We better be quiet and not to tell Lynette that her husband Tom is gay in Desperate Housewives!
acidqueen69: Bree cracks me up
tinneclesage: For the last scene I would choose the proposal, not the fake marriage.
jptr3z: does anybody know whts the name of the background song of dawsons creek scene? and wheres qeer as folk? the l group, oz?
LBColby: those are cable shows, this is about prime time soaps on network TV.
jptr3z: well then dawsons was a cable show, wasnt it?
LBColby: no, it wasn't. it aired on The WB network, which was a broadcast network, like The CW today.
johnlopez66: Thank you for the video.
rainbowyoda: hey, in the dynasty clip, that's Noah, from Heroes!
abcjbc: In Melrose, is the blondey fella in Desparate Housewives?
romeoserdbeer: that is real passion 3:30
atomus: I always hated the way gays are portrayed on american television always seemed so unnatural to me (the way they are portrayed - NOT the fact that they are gay)
AngeloMarinutzi: Yes is Him.....is a great actor right?
Moamg: We've come a long way!
benefit1984: Yes it is him! I've checked on is description career list and the talk about it. Apperently, there was an actuall kiss to be showned but Fox removed it on the aired episode.
benefit1984: I don't really watch tv so... can you tell me more what is or not Prime time soaps? Like what about those like Guiding light or As the world turn, what kind of soaps are they. And I see Desperate housewives heres, so this mean Grey's Anatomy must fill in these. There was an episode with the gay soldiers in season 4, can they make the cut here?
Cidspike: and we have also Indians, Afrobrazilians (the great Pelé is an example), Japanese (São Paulo has the largest Japanese community outside of Japan) and there never been a gay kiss in Brazilian TV... Yeh, i guess Brazil is really a nation of contrasts! And that makes of it so delicious, exotic, exciting!!!!!!!!!! Love Brazil but WHERE IS THE GAY KISS IN BRAZILIAN TV ?
Cidspike: São Paulo is a gigantic city but yet we have Amazon, the largest forest of the world, Brazil has a huge European community (the gorgeous supermodel Gisele Bundchen is an example) with lots of blonde and blue eyes Brazilians
Cidspike: Brazil is one of the worlds largest economies, with lots of Billionaires (called Brazillionaires by the cartoon The Simpsons) and yet has poverty, in famous Copacabana Beach there lots of five star super luxury hotels, a frontline penthouse can easily reach 10 million dollars and close to the hills there are some small slums!
Cidspike: is funny or tragic that in Brazil gay relationships still are a taboo. Amazing is to think that Brazil is the largest soap opera producer of the world, the country of parties, carnival... and still so puritan, so narrow minded when this subject is aborted. In Brazilian TV gays are constantly a funny figure, in comedies, but never threaded seriously like in USA.
Cidspike: I´m from Rio, that was elected the best gay destination of the world recently, Rio is famous for the amazing Carnival that we make, the city stops for 4 days of dance, food, sex, drugs (i´m not hypocrite) , Rio is a sunny and dazzling place! São Paulo, Brazil´s ( And South America) largest metropolis, 3rd largest of the world, largest than New York, has the largest gay parade of the world (4 million people)...
