Sergei Migai [18 (30) .5.1888, Mogilev - 8/12/1959, Moscow] - (lyric baritone) had a strong, smooth, supple voice, charming "velvet" tone and wide range (over two octaves), virtuosic technique, skill filirovki and the ability to sing in mezzo voce. В зависимости от стиля произведения и вокального характера партии певец менял манеру пения и окраску звука. Безупречная кантилена, верхние ноты, в которых, казалось, он "купался", были легкими, непринужденными, лишенными всякой форсировки, и, наконец, четкое, ясное слово при абсолютно чистой интонации. Голос был ему послушен на форте и пиано... Он пел на беспрерывно льющемся звуке. Да, это была кантилена в самом лучшем значении этого слова. Мягкость его голоса сливалась с прекрасным тембром, создавала пластичность, при которой речевые интонации были тесно связаны с музыкой, что в целом составляло характерную, живую, музыкальную речь. Благодаря виртуозному техническому мастерству с равным успехом выступал в лирических и драматических оперных партиях. Репертуар включал 65 оперных партий (из них 43 ведущих)

Kievest: Tchaikovsky despised Onegin and his ilk! Yet, he composed a seemingly lyric aria in which to stab Tatianna in the heart with every phrase! Migai's marvelous dramatic reading does not treat this aria like a pretty tune but rather Onegin's self centered, cynical take on domesticity and love! The last defense of a disappointed Romantic! Migai sounds more like a spinto tenor in places as he colors his voice to sound cold and somewhat metallic. Thank you for posting this great gem!
