One Day at the Pacific National Exhibition: Part 1 Video

Those of us born here in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia know the Best Part of Summer comes during the two weeks prior to Labor Day. That is when everyone finds their way to the park at the end of Hastings Street in Vancouver, as they have done for the past ninety-nine years. Here, agriculture, livestock, technology, commerce, industry, culture, motor sports, dancers, acrobats, lumberjacks, and entertainers—powered by copious amounts of Those Little Donuts—create the seventeen-day Pacific National Exhibition.

Since 1999, I have actively sought through photographs to preserve memories of "The Fair at the PNE". This year, I decided to apply video and video editing software to the task of creating a visual document for August 24, 2009, when I became one of the 855,137 in total attendance. After we arrived I hit the ground and did not stop running for nine hours. I did not even stop to eat; it was 24 hours before my next meal. I had one day to see and do as much as possible. All did not go according to plan. I was unable to catch the Pig Races, West Coast Logging Show, Celtic Legends, KC Bears Street Party, On The Edge Motorsport Show, or the Dal Richards Orchestra, and April Wine did not perform "Bad Side of the Moon" (which I had intended to record and post separately). Therefore, this is by no means a complete record of all the day's events, simply those from my own perspective.

This project became so large that I divided it into halves. Here is the first of two parts. In this segment you will find:

The Marketplace
Leo (BC Lions Mascot)
Toon Rock Parade
Superdogs
PNE Prize Home
Food Stalls
Spirit Plaza
Container Art
Farm Country

Oh yes, and as you have probably guessed, I did see Woodstock again recently.

64mung: Nice work, Michael! Looks like you had a lot of fun shooting this video :) Great camera work and editing here..love the split screen shots, I also like how you used a map to show where the events were taking place..pretty cool idea! 5 stars! 64m >:-) Btw...gotta love that 'container art' ;)
MChelada: Container Art was brand spanking new this year. I hope they will bring it back ;) I have been working on this video for almost a month now (longer than the actual PNE!). I finished Part 1 last week and uploaded it now because I hope to get Part 2 up soon. It has been grueling because I have had to use paint programs to remove grit on the photographs, in addition to all the editing. Thank you for watching this all the way through (Part 2 will be as long), and for the Five Stars! =^_^=
JSalinari83: All I can say bro is great work my brother. This video is a two thumbs up for sure. You are a truly talented camera man. I wish I had that talent.
MChelada: Thanks Bro, though if I were a truely talented camera man I think I would be employed by CTV or the CBC. It takes a lot of practice, a lot of trials and experiments, and above all TIME. This is a month's work here; it doesn't just simply free flow out (at least not always). Look for ways to practice, my brother, and I know you can do great.
