Il s'émerveille et dit:
Par mon arme, vrai me dit ma mère da dame
qui me dit que les diables sont choses
plus effrayantes du monde.

Elle dit pour moi enseigner
que pour eux se doit-on signer,
mais jamais ne me signerai
cet einseignement dédaignerai.


ET QUAND IL LES VIT EN APERT

Perceval:
Et quant il les vit en apert
que du bois furent découverts,
il vit les hauberts frémissants
et les heaumes clairs et luisants
et vit le vert et le vermeil
reluire contre le soleil
et l'or et l'azur et l'argent,
si lui fut moult très bel et gent.

Et dit: Biaux Sire Dieu, merci
ce sont anges qui je vois ci.
Et vrai or ai-je moult péché,
qui dit que c'était des diables.

Ne me dit pas ma mère fable
qui me dit que les anges sont
les plud belles choses qui sont,
Hors Dieu qui est plus bel que tout.

And the approaching knight's armor
made a great racket,
for the branches of oak and hornbeam

ET QUAND IL LES VIT EN APERT

glistening in the sunshine,
and the gold, the blue, and the silver:
he found it most fair and noble.

Then he said: Lord Gog, I give you thanks!
These are angels I see before me.
Ah! in truth I sinned grievously and did a most wicked thing
in saying they were the devils.

My mother did not lie to me
when she told me that angels were
the most beautiful creatures alive,
except god, who is the fairest of all.
