Wood Striper Lure Building PT 5 (Finishing the thru-drilling) Video
IN this video im finishing off the plug, I start off by continuing the thru-drill on the lip side. Remember when we started that pilot hole, this is what its for. So I mount my stock (plug) on the lathe with the lip side facing the drill chuck. I move the drill chuck so that its not terribly tight in the pilot hole, but in far enough where the wobble of the lure wont cause the lure to come off the drill or wobble and scratch the lure. Once its on I start my lathe (remember the speed needs to be set to the lowest speed to maintain safety) I crank the drill chuck so that it drilles through. If done right this will drill through the center of the plug and meet with the other hole in the grommet section. After im done thru drilling on the lathe, Ill use my hand drill with a long bit (7") of the same diamater and drill through the existing hole until i reach the grommet hole. I flip the lure around and do the same thing on both sides. As you can see, sawdust will exist throught the belly grommet when you drill from both sides. Clean this dust out and make sure you have a center drill. I then cut the tail stock off and voila, a plug blank is born... still much more to come including sealing, belly weighting, filling in belly holing, sanding, priming, painting, clearcoating, wiring, test swimming and trashing based on how the lure performs. Stay tuned!
FYI, I buy my plug building equipment from www.capecodtackle.com, they are fukin awesome guys over there. I also learned alot of stuff from the guys in the lurebuilding section of http://stripersonline.com/surftalk/forumdisplay.php?f=169 (Use the search feature, its your friend). Please do all you can to support these spectacular sites!!
61diemai: With great interest I have vieved all of the 5 parts of your video , ....really a nice instructional vid , thanks for posting ! I also turn down a few lureblanks sometimes , but my lathe is not as versatile as yours , can't drill through the workpiece , so I need to chuck'em vertically into the vise on my drillpress and drill from either side to meet in center . But I don't tru-wire cranks this way , only topwater lures with rotating heads . greetz from Germany , 61diemai
carnagebeatz: np, ill replace that drilling video tomorrow. Its a fun hobby when you have time, usually winter is the best time to build for me as the rest of the seasons my interest is elswhere. There is another way to thru-drill them but you would need a good drill press and mine is a $49 budget press. I floor standing one with good travel would be optimal. Keep building!
