Steely Dan Dallas Video

DALLAS (Becker/Fagen, ABC Records, Probe 562 - 1972)
I lived in holy house but the Grand Hotel
Back streets of this old town I know so well
and I drunken no holy wine save Muscatel
And now my friend I got to go
You tell everyone I know
Sayin' goodbye

(chorus)

Bye bye Dallas
I can't stay
Should've been at the Palace
Yesterday
Bye bye Dallas
Got to go
And I remember when they told me so

Right now I'm wonderin' where the good times are gone
All the things I never loved
And they're what's mine
A hot city and an empty park
Can make a man think on
And I been living low so long
I gotta get back where I belong

(Chorus)

(Chorus)

(Alt chorus)

Bye bye Dallas
I can't stay
Should've been at the Palace
Yesterday
Hey no father
It's understood
Livin' low undercover
I'm/You're no good
Bye bye Dallas

fluffydolly: another great one......thanks melegorm!!!!!
Melegorm: @ fluffy: many thanks! I really wasn't sure about this tune, but it has a very early '70s country & western sensibility, maybe even a touch of Glen Campbell :-)
chalone2: you've shown us many sides of Fagen and Becker that most of us have never known!! and who is the vocalist? sure nor either of the guys...
Melegorm: @ Chalone: Au contraire!! I've always mentioned if Keith Thomas -- the forgotten first vocalist of the Dan -- is flexing the golden pipes, ha,ha...I believe this is Thomas at work. Check my comments for "Ida Lee" and "Let George Do It". Thomas' daughter even has a website to her dad's work.
StrangeArrangements: Thank for sharing. =)
superspidercat: you are showing the rarely seen side of the Dan...thank you!
groundhog713: The guy singing this is original drummer Jimmy Hodder. He does a fine job of this. The band Poco covered this song (who were on the same label ABC like Steely Dan), but this is versio is way better!
groundhog713: Love Jeff "Skunk" Baxter's pedal steel guitar work on this...
Melegorm: @groundhog: thanks for the correction - had no idea Jim Hodder did vox at all! Excellent. Yes, the pedal steel is amazing!
chalone2: ah...I'm not as up on the earliest Dan work as I could be! thanks for the info.
curumina1: this is great! music, montage, informative comments, thanks, Melegorm, straight to my Dan playlist with 5*+!
Melegorm: @Curumina: Thank you so much Paula! Much appreciated :-D
mozdickson: yes thanks Melle, never heard this but anything featuring Jeff 'is that a sitar i hear' Skunk Baxter is fine by me!
andyinoregon: Superb as always, Mel. I first heard this in the audio library at Bowling Green State U. in the autumn of 1974. Loved it then and later bought the Poco LP "Head Over Heels" just to get their gorgeous cover of the tune. Two of the best pedal steel players ever, The Dan's Jeff Baxter and Poco's Rusty Young do some of their best work on this very under-appreciated song by Becker & Fagen.
nam1956: another great track Mel, I've been a Dan fan for over 30 yeras but I've never heard this song. Thanks for sharing & for the brilliant video..
Melegorm: @Nam - glad you enjoyed it! There are still a few diamonds in the rough from the early Becker and Fagen years to be polished up :-)
Melegorm: @ Andy: Thanks for mentioning Poco, another terrific rock act from the '70s -- I remember owning LPs by them at the time. There's such a musical legacy out there!
nam1956: In that case Mel I'm looking forward to your next installment !! Regards, NAM.
MrBjorn91: I read in a magazine that this was Steely Dans first single way back in 1972. Drummer Jim Hodder sang on this tune but Donald Fagen disliked his singing. When they recorded their debut album ´Can't Buy A Thrill` David Palmer sang on a couple of tunes but as we all know it was Donald Fagen who became the permanent lead singer. I heard this tune for the first time right now. I think it´s very interesting to hear how Steely Dan developed during the 70's. From rock to jazz/fusion.
