Muzułmańskich krajach Maghrebu pojawiły się grupy ludności nazywane przez Arabów Saqaliba. Termin Saqaliba używany przez niego oraz innych kronikarzy średniowiecznych, jest najprawdopodobniej kalką językową łacińskich słów: sqlavus, sclavus, slaves. Odnosiłby się wówczas do Słowian lub niewolników.

Łacińskie "sclavus" to pierwowzór słów oznaczających niewolników: "sklave" - po niemiecku, "slave" - po angielsku, "esclave" - po francusku. W VIII, IX i X w. ważnym miejscem sprzedaży niewolników słowiańskich był Kijów. Sprzedawali nas Warego-Rusowie na zachód. Dalej szlak niewolniczy prowadził przez Pragę do Ratyzbony w Bawarii, Lyonu we Francji i wreszcie do Hiszpanii. Władcy muzułmańscy tworzyli sobie ze Słowian gwardie przyboczne o nazwie "Saqaliba".
