Debt - would you go into debt in order to ' afford ' your video game hobby? Video

An ongoing discussion over at armchair arcade. Going into debt and what for became an interesting discussion. Here's what I think about it. Please respond.

I don't think it is wrong to carry a debt, but I do think one has to be really thoughtful about what you want to go into debt for.

A hobby is something extra, one should never go into debt for something like a hobby. Going into debt for a basic life-necessity like a roof above your head is something different all together. But even when you go for a mortgage to finance the purchase of a house you need to be careful not to go in over your head.

Elise and I are in the process of buying a house and we will have a mortgage on it but it will not be the top mortgage the bank is dangling in front of us. We opted to go for half of that which would make it easy for us to pay off the mortgage ending up with very doable monthly payments comparable with a regular rent. In 25 years time the house is totally paid and we're mortgage free.

newcoleco: I prefer trading when it's possible, it's a "win-win" situation most of the time.
markvergeer: Trading is a good way to go indeed!
HalfBlindGamer: No, I wouldn't go into debt. That said I do find myself saying "wish I'd waited with that..." a couple of times where some other big bill hits just after your last purchase. I do hunt for small prices and see it as a hobby to not only collect and play but also find some nice deals. A lot of small prices will stack up fast too though. But I'm careful enought to avoid dept. I'm young and can wait a couple of years for most items I'd want. It's not like I'd be bored with what I have soon ;)
MaximumRD: Yes it is insane, that said I have been known to go a little crazy lol! I am getting better, I am about a month away from settling my VISA balance and then I will try to be more careful and more patient. I give this advice though, while in the process of eliminating debt STAY OFF SITES LIKE Ebay because this is when you will alays find the best most incredible deals that you cannot pass up, what you don't know CAN hurt you lol!
blacklily8: I despite trading. I always get ripped off and feel like the other guy came out ahead. Even if I was able to "sucker" somebody, I'd feel bad about it. Just not my style. I prefer to buy stuff from people who just want a quick buck and don't really have any attachment to their game or device. I always like getting something for a lot less than they were asking originally. :) My favorite purchases are big boxes full of stuff. That's just a great adventure trying it all out.
markvergeer: Well you don't want to get ripped off when you trade, nor do you want to ' sucker ' anybody. With good and honest trading you both come away with it feeling that you made a good deal. It is supposed to be that way when you trade. If not - than it is a bad trade. Getting stuff cheap from yardsales is also a nice thing to do. Would not happen in the Netherlands though. Not a yardsale culture going on here :-(....
