1998/99 Season: Scarborough 1 - 2 Hull City Video
Mark Hateley's second and last away win as City manager came after a week of turmoil, when every week seemed to be a week of turmoil. All of David Lloyd's had left his pram and having threatened to close the club prior to the Cardiff home game the week previous and while he didn't go through with his threat it seemed the clubs future was in the balance once again. Former Chairman Don Robinson had been linked with a move to takeover City once again and eventual new chairman Tom Belton started makes noises in the media.
On the pitch, City were starting to be stranded at the bottom of the league with Hateley finally playin but utterly clueless at the managerial part of his job things didn't look like changing any time soon. The 2-1 defeat against Cardiff was spirited and at least showed some fight coming into the game at the McCain Stadium.
The weather was torrential rain and the City fans filled the away end creating an almighty din. It was a cracking game despite the conditions, plenty of counter attacking and good chances. Neil Mann's last goal for City opened the scoring before Hoyland equalised. Then Hateley slid home and scored his one and only open goal for City to wild celebrations.
Robinson was in attendance although refused to deal with Lloyd regarding the debts at the club leaving the door open for Belton's consortium to takeover the club and, with Warren Joyce appointed as player/manager, try and plot an impossible way to safety. The rest is history.
