The future of cinema: This Is It Video

Michael Jackson has shown the way. Under the watchful eyes of the great Kenny Ortega (whose High School Musical series of movies are, as I have explained many times, the very definition of pure movie entertainment) the King of Pop has delivered unto us an all-singing, all-dancing saviour of cinema...

johncrwarner: Interesting - I know people in the USA who go to opera screening because it is not available on the television and there is no opera house doing it. I have three opera houses within a 100 km so I don't need to go to these screenings. The thing about operas is that like This Is It - they are a completely artificial creation - a butterfly under glass - the fact it is in cinemas means they think it can make money as it will when they sell the TV rights.
fish231uk: Great points Mark....unfortunately they were all voided when you referred to the High School Musicals as modern masterpieces.
Konve: Who is the arty freak that can't help but playing with the zoom button?
TenderHistoryInRust: Modern masterpeices, you idiot, you are always saying that with absolutly no justification. Awful awwful children's fodder. If you went into watching this is it and expected a 'proper film' then you're also an idiot, it was made for Michael Jackson fans, no one else. I don't like MJ so I don't want to watch it, I have absolutly no problem with Cinemas playing films like this.
culleton7: yeah spot on but its all just for money because cinema is losing so much money to download they need new way to make money and they done so
bigfatcosmo: The High School Musical movies are great because they understand their audience exactly, they're also enjoyable to watch, hold your attention and showcase real talent (I challenge anyone who moans about them to dance like that!) They really are good, and what's more, anyone can watch them, so smut, no violence, just fun, which sometimes is what cinema should be about! Stop being stuck up about them! This is it, not my cup of tea, but I'm sure it's awesome
danxtur: No problem liking somehting thats not film
DannyBoy777: Have to agree with fish231uk, Mark has a habit of making very valid points and then undercutting them all by labelling some mildly entertaining tosh as a masterpeice. I think he did the same with Mamma Mia! did he not ?. As for This Is It, I wanna check it out. I am a huge MJ fan, have been since I was about 6. It seems like a great one for the proper fans. Friend of mine actually went to the London Premiere and said it was fantastic. Anyway, what was I gonna say ?... hmm nevermind.
hiiimatthew: well said mark! very nice conclusive statement
DanzNewzMachinima: I greatly respect the fact that the actors and everyone else involved with the High School Musical movies are very talented professionals... I just can't watch them for more than 2 minutes without wanting to punch the screen... again, like you said... they're targeting a different audience and they do it well... I just personally don't like the films... 'not my cup of tea' :)
cuntscab555: pah, nonsense. best use of the cinema is huge loud cinema movies, preferably in 3d. storytellers and artists i'll continue to watch at home
HuxleyWasRight: think i'll go and watch stomp instead .
toonuraccoon: Nice one Mark, that was well rounded and I can't really disagree with what you are saying.
TulseLuper: But does that excuse the cinematic release of Charles Dickens's England? "And HE-YAR is a house that Charles Dickens once lived in!"
swampmonsta1: watch HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3???
DoctorHello: 'This is it' was a good documentary film and a unique cinematic experience indeed. It also reminded me how much of a genius Michael Jackson was even in the last days of his life and how immensely spectacular that concert would have been.
dananddanfilms: Can we go one step further, and serve actual real ale at the cinema? Another great vlog Mr Kermode.
trippingmartian: I agree with all of Mark's points except that bit about Jarvis Cocker rushing the stage during Michael's performance. I still think that was a douche move.
