Russian leader Vladimir Putin is nostalgic for communist East Germany, he has said ahead of celebrations marking 20 years since the Berlin Wall was torn down.


Describing his five years as a KGB agent in Dresden, Mr Putin said he had good memories of his time there, when he learned German and went on Christmas trips into the mountains.
"I still remember this warmth and cordiality," the prime minister told broadcaster NTV. "I am very thankful for this. In this respect there is some feeling of nostalgia."
But he went on to say he his pleased Russia has good relations "on a new basis" with post-reunification Germany, adding: "This of course makes any nostalgia secondary."
In the interview, which forms part of a documentary on the fall of the Berlin Wall, Mr Putin spoke for the first time about his time in the intelligence service.
He said it was "not the worst years of my life and I would even say good ones".

Yet by the time he arrived in East Germany in 1985, it was already clear the regime was stuck in the past and resistant to change compared to the Soviet Union, he said.
Citizens could see the West had a better quality of life and East Germany's ways "could not withstand competition".
Going on to speak about current relations between Russia and Germany, Mr Putin told NTV: "There is an understanding that we need each other. And that is the main thing."
World leaders are gathering in Germany for a show of unity 20 years after the fall of the Wall made history.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown will be at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and France's President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Alexei Dymovsky is reported to have directed his message to Mr Putin.
He said in the video: "I am tired of being made to uncover crimes that do not exist. I am tired of being told that these are the people who we need go to jail."
