ImSneakyPete: it was original catholic teachings that people are saved by baptism. If a baby died before it was baptised it was not saved. Of course this doctrine is heretical in the church today.
DDR212: Originally in the Divine comedy, babies that never knew God's love were in the first circle of hell; Limbo. Like they said before though, they don't follow the original text verbatim so you see the babies through out hell as enemies.
