Mt. Floyd Erupts Video
Floyd erupts following an infield fly rule.
lgradyl: If it is going to be ruled an infield fly, the umpire MUST announce "Infield fly if fair" or "infield fly: batter's out". If there is no announcement, you can assume that he/she will not be ruling it an infield fly, therefore also assume that there is a force out at home. The infield fly rule is a MLB rule. Often misinterpreted. However, you CANNOT enforce an infield fly after-the-fact like this. Its just terribly bad management of the game on the part of the umpire. Tough break.
lgradyl: The rule states that if a ball is hit in the air and can be caught with a reasonable amount of effort by an infielder (not necessarily IN the infield or even BY an infielder) and there are less than two outs, with a force out at third (runners on first and second, or bases loaded), then the batter runner shall be declared out and all other runners advance at their own risk. Im not sure that it could have been caught with a reasonable amount of effort, so I don't think the rule applies here.
lgradyl: With a force at third, a high pop up in the infield used to be intentionally missed. Since the runners at the bases would hold as not to be doubled up..they would then be easily forced out. That is the reason for the rule.
