The Barber of Siberia (Bilingual subtitles). Part 17/17. Video

The Barber of Siberia (Bilingual subtitles). Part 17/17.

"The Barber of Siberia" is dedicated by Mikhalkov to Russian officers, "the pride of the country", and its main topic is the set of values regarded as the cornerstone of Russian mentality, culture and politics. Those values seem to be honor and truthfulness, but also to obey authority and blind willingness to sacrifice one's life.

The plot is a love-story, however a very unorthodox one. Jane Callahan, a once beautiful American, writes to her son, a cadet at a famous military academy, but who is he? Her memories take us back 20 years to when she arrived in Russia to assist Douglas McCracken, an obsessive engineer who needs the Grand Duke's patronage to sponsor his invention...

birubirFilms: Yeeessss! ;-) I did it!!! :-)))))
natalkaukrainka: ogromnije spasibo (ne mogla dozdatsa)
marchx25: spasibo Vam ogromnoje, sizhu vtoroj den' zhdu, kogda ves' film zakachajete :)) horoshego Vam vechera! :)
SouthUkraine: Mozart is a GREAT Composer.!!! Thank you so much for uploading. you are the BesT! ochen silniy film, keeps you wondering what was going through Tolstoy's mind when he saw her at the end.....
PhotonDrive: Trilingual film. I guess this is what Mendelev meant when he invited Russian film-makers to get out & be shown all over the world? Must say I find Andrei more than a little nuts, but then I've heard of a poet in St. Petrsburg who slashed his throat when his girlfriend left him - so I guess such extremes are a known part of the Russian scene?
davidperi: Thanks for posting...couple months back I saw most of it but not the last couple of videos....looking for more to come.
Darkonomist: One of the best films I've ever seen in my life. It made me cry since I had a similar situation in my life. Thanks a lot!
alpointru: "so I guess such extremes are a known part of the Russian scene?" In that case, "Romeo and Juliette" is greatest Russian product...
PhotonDrive: Sorry - my comment was superficial. The film was very deep & could even be interpreted as an anti-military culture offering? The idea that SHE could "reinvent" herself, while HE - forced into different conditions by his jealous act forms a laison with the maid is very ironic.
alpointru: @PhotonDrive In this film so much is bound... Mikhalkov is ingenious just because in simple plots which can be retold briefly, him manages to conclude so much SENSES and to glance in chasms of human soul... He is simultaneously both Tolstoy and Dostoevsky of Russian cinema... PS the film is devoted Russian officers... Because the point of honour was and remains a main point for the officer... And not only for Russian...
thecollector89: Спасибо! Давно хотел видеть
PhotonDrive: What I find so disturbing - & not just here but many Mikhalov films, is the tech-transition background. Here, the violence of the "Barber" is celebrated, yet already giving way to the greater violence of the gas motor! YET STILL THE TREES REMAIN (opening, closing shots). Not only the "Romantic" figures, but the entire Military/Gov. doings are HOPELESSLY OUT OF DATE & TOUCH! No provision whatever is made for change or transition. Yet it is THIS playing with their lives (& ours).
alpointru: The mankind life by and large also is the big game. Players vary, and game proceeds... While...
Jekyl99999: Thanks for that movie.
PhotonDrive: Look: I dig the movie, but glamourizing past techs makes viewers feel cozy & safe, while forgeting the enormous suffering those transitions entailed! Having just invented cheap self-propelling powered transport, I see more suffering ahead as 20 billion is laid out to introduce all-electrics, which only 5% of pop. will be able to afford. These problems should be addressed now: not in 30 years on top of 100 million dead bodies! Future not "Glamourous" - but could be!
kondosca: Ughhhhhh! the U.S. flag has 50 stars, which is not the number in the year 1885 ! Nevertheless, a good film....
birubirFilms: Yes, you are right. I read that it was one of the mistakes of the film. ;-)
guruzin: Thank you for the movie. Really GREAT...
jg300gman: interesting film....thank you birubirFilms! As a former US Nato Soldat (1988-1992) who caught a small glimpse of the Russian garrison in Potsdam.... I really appreciated the insights into the cadet school and training/comradeship of the cadets And especially moving was the cadet marching and ceremony before the Czar...very moving! Great stuff...Thanks!!! Also the scene with the general drinking vodka and chasing "Napoleon" was quite funny. More military movies please!
