NwZ2: Man, this is unbelievable. This is why the american system of politics fails with its so-called checks n balances. Here we have a DEFINITIVE example of one man, or a very SMALL handful of people, who hold the KEY (aka power) to something passing or not yet at the same time the MAJORITY party in office, elected on certain MANDATES, cannot act upon said mandates. RIDICULOUS. We need the U.S. to come up to Canada asap to learn how Canadian politicians get shit done in terms of party discipline.

anon101anon: In some ways I think party discipline IS the problem. That is to say, the only reason he has so much power is because, rather than actually representing their states, Republican senators are refusing to vote pretty much just to be partisan assholes. It's frustrating that the Republicans are politically smart (great at spinning things, loyal to party) but policy-wise are idiots...while the Democrats are actually somewhat rational human beings...but suck at politics.

He'll go down in history as the one psychoprick who torpedoed the one reform bill of the century that would have brought the U.S. somewhat in line with the rest of the ENTIRE WESTERN WORLD -- i.e., we would have had a relatively tepid national plan, but nevertheless at least SOME kind of plan as opposed to absolutely nothing, for national health care. Lieberman is a whore for the insurance industry. GET HIM OUT!
