ASTEROID 2009 VA MISSED EARTH BY 14000 KM Video
On Nov. 6th at 2132 UT, asteroid 2009 VA barely missed Earth when it flew just 14,000 km above the planet's surface. That's well inside the "Clarke Belt" of geosynchronous satellites. If it had hit, the ~6-meter wide space rock would have disintegrated in the atmosphere as a spectacular fireball, causing no significant damage to the ground. 2009 VA was discovered just 15 hours before closest approach by astronomers working at the Catalina Sky Survey. It is expected to be 5-11 meter in size cruising across at 10 km/sec.
systat: Too bad it didn't hit, hopefully bigger one will hit earth soon enough.
McSchnakenhals: At 2060 your wish, systat, could be fullfilled. If you are lucky, you will meet that one personally.
SexiMausuu91: wär super wenn sich jemand findet der mit mir schreiben und so will bin so alleine zur zeit
SY1WEK: so this thing is going to orbit until it eventually hits us?
tphilp74: Its ok, its next closest approach will be on Nov. 7th, 2166 between 1pm and 10pm UTC.
SY1WEK: good, ill be dead by then ;) will suck for my next generation kids tho (If impact) :(
eicebleu: It's only 7 meters--it'll burn up in atmo.
